Sounds like a fair idea.

The one we had -- which has long since broken -- was cut with the jig saw.

I was going through my photos for the october photo comp when I found this...

This set of nest boxes were already here when we moved in.
In winter the girls decided to sleep in the nest boxes rather than roost on the perches.
Occasionally the rooster would squish in the box with the silkie.

That looks awesome - that is what I intend to build to attach to the side of the cubby house that I use for a coop with the lift up doors on the outside so I can collect eggs without going in. I just haven't gotten around to it and my hubby is no good with wood so I will have to build myself.

I was looking at using the plastic ones above in the mean time inside the coop - oh well if I can't find them I guess it may give me the incentive to just get on and start building the nest boxes that I really would like.

Thanks for the photo - its good to get some ideas from.

I agree that is awesome I like the fact they used metal and not wood so much better for hygiene & to keep clean

We have used plastic drums for years and love the fact they are easy to clean and easy to replace and cheap

I have almost given up on boxes my bloody chooks lay everyware but in the box drives me nuts any suggestions on how to make them lay in the boxes??????

try locking them up in their house until mid afternoon, that way they HAVE to lay the egg in the house

are the nests attractive to chooks? are they clean with nice bedding straw or wood shavings? or dusty with chook poo in them?

are they in a darkened spot or in a quiet corner in the chook house?

put a plastic egg or two in the nest

I use commercial wooden boxes but I am not a big fan of them as they take a lot of work to clean and spray every couple of months. If I change it would be to plastic or metal

I have used old mower catchers for years now and my old girls just love em. We go to the rubbish tip on a regular basis {shopping} and can always find more if needed
