Breeding Pen Ideas??

Does anyone have any Ideas for pens that I will be making for 3 different breeds of Bantams and 1 pen if I want to put a hen and rooster in to cross breed.

For example: If I want to breed Polish Frizzles I will need to take a frizzle and a polish and put them in a seperate pen to do the deed and lay me some lovely little eggs (hopefully).
But would also like to keep the breeds seperate at other times.

I was thinking of using Dog Kennels for roosting boxes etc, 1 for each pen, but not sure of this as yet because I think over time the wood would rot.

Any ideas would be very welcome, I know if I start it my OH will end up helping as he will see everything I am doing wrong

Hi Deb. I have used those little plastic dog kennels in a couple of mine and they seem okay.

I just custom-built a large chicken tractor/breeding pen/growing pen however at about $700 worth of materials and 4 weekends or more to build it I wouldn't recommend going that way! :roll:

It was fun to make and looks great, but way over budget in terms of time and money.

I recently got 4 x breeding pens---what I got was an aviary divided in four sections---as big as they come standard---it did cost me 1600 dollars but that was delivered and installed----and being a very unhandy woman and no other helper around it was well worth it----a few branches for perches,and recycled chlorine drums and chests of drawers for nest boxes I am in business :-D

Thanks Deb and Pam,

I am not sure if my OH will let me spend to much on this project, I am lucky though because when we bought this property it come with about 2 new sheets of corrugated iron which is on stands under a tarp also a very big fram that needs to be put together. But I think the size and height that would be is suitable for like a peafowl enclosure.

Maybe I should sit down with pen and paper and do a floor desigh/layout that may help a bit.

I use wooden dog kennels a lot for my pekin pens. I use the wire and shade cloth from Kylie down the coast and I put the kennel up off the ground on another level. This gives plently of ground room as they can also access under the kennel and the kennel is the roost and egg laying area. I try to get really big kennel off ebay or out of the trading post. One of my pens I used a motorcycle shipping crate for the upper level. The either wood rounds or a ramp fo get to the upper level. I also cover the pens in iron roofing sheets. I can smaller off cuts cheap from a person at Cedar Grove.

Hi Deb the following 2 is my lavender pekin breeding pen made from the motorbike transport crate. I have since also roofed the entire outside part of the pen as well.

This is Meggzie's pen multi coloured breeding pen. This pen now also has a choko vine growing up the west side and on top. It is also halpf covered with roofing iron and shade cloth the rest.

Wow CL, they look great. And also gives me some ideas so thank you for that.
I wouldn't mind some of that wire from Kylie but am so far away and would probably cost an arm and a leg to get some here.
