At the moment I am feeding Lord Francis's flock on Golden Yolk

Not sure what Lord Francis ate at his last home before here.

Is golden yolk a good type of layers pellets there has it got enough protein

Does Lord Francis need special food for being a Rooster

Didn't buy scratch mix two weeks ago

I did change the feed a month ago as well as diffent supplier.

Before that it was a layer pellets from another place that had a protein % of 18 compared to the one in golden yolk which is minimum 15 %

Should scratch mix be kept apart from the layer pellets

In between may to last month before I bought more layer pellets I mixed layer pellets and scratch mix together.

The scratch mix I used was just called that I would have to buy it aging or go back to the produce store for the name.

Even tried grains before may that brought on soft shells

i've heard this is pretty good so if they like it then stick to it. I use Top Layer mash & my Clyde eats it & he's fine

i see heaps of people buy it so it can't be too bad

this all depends if you see them favouring just the scratch mix over the pellets. Is this what you mean? Or do you mean for storage purposes, you're question wasn't real clear.

if this worked for you & you didn't find any problems between the two types of feed then I say stick with what works for you
The scratch mix I used was just called that I would have to buy it aging or go back to the produce store for the name.

Even tried grains before may that brought on soft shellswell I'd avoid that like the plague, but do you give your girls extra shell grit in a separate dish as I wouldn't rely on the feeds to have enough shell grit in it to help with their required calcium supplement

Hope this helped

I didn't notice if they were favouring the scratch mix or pellets, But I have bought Chicken lollies ( sun flower seeds.) lately some got into the grit bowl and they did scratch that out. Storage didn't worry my for a bit until I thought it could be thrown on the ground for them to scratch up.

And I too will be avoiding grain feeds Yes I do give them shell grit by crushing eggshells and its put into a small dish for them, last Christmas I had Oyster's I crushed up those shells too the girls loved them, also have bought some shell and oyster grit on ebay working though it slowly.

Hope this helped

Your welcome wave.gif

I don't think the Pellets will last any longer than the Mash as the Barastock book says that the hens will eat about 125-130g of feed/day and considering they're both in 20kg bags I don't think it makes a difference really.

Here's the link to the book if you don't have it already :-D

The price. The Layers Mash is more eggspensive than the Golden Yolk Layer Pellets.

I use the Peter's Free Range Poultry Mix for Lady Frances with either the Darling Layer Downs or the Red Hen Layer, it depends where we shop either locally or in the next township.

http://peterspureanimalfoods.com/produc ... ry-mix.php
http://www.lauckemills.com.au/poultry-layer4.html

The little ones are on Red Hen Pullet.

Hello PP,

Have you tried the Pro Vit Min, its various grains with added vitamins as little pellets. No animal products either. Our local stock feed sells is for $20 for 20 kg bag. My flock is on this and there's never any wastage.

Thank you, kindly 52.gif for the recommendation, Chickababe, I only have Lady Frances to feed big chook at the moment. I will get some when they are all on the same feed.

Golden Yolk Layer Pellets are a complete and you only need add greens and some oyster shell and clean fresh water and you will have happy chooks

Is the oyster shell for calcium? can I use crushed shell grit instead?
