Hi there, newbie here ... I did search before posting and nothing came up, so I thought I'd ask.

Moving to acreage in a couple of weeks .... I was recently speaking to a girlfriend who lives on acreage at Ipswich and she's a guinea pig breeder who has lost dozens of pigs to snakes. She got herself a couple of those solar powered snake repellers and claims she had a snake free season (whereas before they were catching a different snake species every couple of days).

So, she recently moved the hutches beyond the range of her pulse repellers and, voila, 2 pigs gone in as many days. She mistakenly thought her units had a range of 20m, but they were in fact only 10m. She put hutches back and no more vipers since!

I've found some from a guy who's been making & selling them with great success in Oz for 6 years and sells them to Govt. Depts. such as schools, police stations etc. that are rural. His units have a 40m radius and he says the average "normal house" size block only needs x 2 to adequately cover. He also sells snake fence and traps, and those rat & mice contraptions that electrocute rats, mice or anything else that crawls into the chamber - I'm thinking of getting some of them as well.

The decent vibrational solar repllers with battery back-up work out the same price, if not LESS than the el cheapo no-brand name ones imported by the 1m's from China. Plus his after sales service includes free parts in the event you run over a stem with a lawnmower etc.

Anyone had any experience with these, good or bad? I want something to protect all my 4 legged critters, chooks, ducks, peafowl and people. I plan on getting 20 guinea fowl as well, but I can't expect them to cover the entire 3 acres. There's no smilie for terrified lol!

Do you have pictures and more info on the guy who makes them? There are heaps of topics on these devices, here one recent viewtopic.php?f=6&t=57810 most find they do not work

This is the snake repeller http://www.oakent.com.au/Sentinel%20Q%2 ... peller.htm

and this is the rat & mouse zapper: http://www.oakent.com.au/Rat%20killer.htm

He went into all these products because his wife is European, they live in the country & she lived in constant terror ... a bit like myself really! Crikeys, I live 3 bus stops from the CBD & we have snakes here which never ceases to amaze me.

I should've said, "currently live 3 bus stops from the city", in a couple of weeks it'll be "out bush" so I'm gearing up.

I know the rat zap does work good but just 1 rat at a time would be better to work on 2 or 3 at one time but still works good

Thanks Leohen, that's reassuring to know, and also a clear indication to me that this man knows his stuff! I really don't believe he would continue selling them to Govt. purchasing officers for various departments, schools if his inventions/products were just a crock.

I've ordered x 6 of the snake repellers and think I'll order 4 of the rat blasters after your post has reassured me.

Well, I guess it depends on which brand you buy i.e. cheap Chinese junk or quality ones - I'm sure hoping so because we saw a snake the first evening we were at the new property. I still haven't found which box they're in, but as soon as I do they're going into the ground lickety split! Just had a local handyman here looking at jobs to be done (he used to breed all the deadlies) and said this property is "Snake Heaven", just what I did NOT want to hear!!
