nesting liner

I am wondering what's the best material to use to line my nesting boxes for my brown hens? they keep eating the hay and chaff and I am running out of options

you could try sugar cane mulch , its one of the things i use an they :mrgreen:

so far just lay in it

but girls will be girls

I use it and they don't eat it they do scratch it out some day but I just put it back

Someone told me yesterday to use carpet? has anyone tried that?

I use corrugated cardboard then wood shavings on top that way it’s easy to clean out and they are reluctant to scratch it out

I've used bark chips/mulch, and leaf mulch. The bark chips work the best for me, tho it's pretty rough if you're going to let them hatch anything.

For my ducks, I've been using grass clippings. You've got to put a stopper at the front to stop them scratching it out, but it works well too.

One thing I've done for my hens is get some grass catchers standing on end, and fill it up with bark chips, then put grass clippings etc on top making sure there is a few inches left at the top. They don't seem to scratch it out then.

Do you dry the clippings out first? I was told not to use fresh grass clipping because it will rot in the nest boxes and can cause disease?
