I am a bit confused as to which heat source I should use in my new brooder I have the choice of a red heat lamp or a normal 100w globe or a reptile heater mat. I am not worried about the cost just which is better for the chicks?

I use ceramic globes - they screw into an aluminium cover
they come in 100 - 150 -200W and perhaps 250
you just have to make sure that you get the height right by testing just above the chicks heads with the back of your hand for a few seconds = if it is too hot move the lamp up a bit etc
I have found they are very good and you also have to consider that the old style light bulbs have been outlawed and you will not be able to locate more in OZ
also the ceramic bulbs do not emit light at all so the chicks get to sleep at night making for calmer chicks

reptile mats are good for a small number of chicks/small area
I have no experience with the red heat lamps

Can I please ask where you got the ceramic globes from and do they fit a normal screw light fitting?

I have found the ceramic globes a bit hard to find where I live. I bought one from a company which puts out a catalogue (forgotten the name) and it was mailed to me.
The second I ordered from Brookfield Poultry equipment http://www.brookfieldpoultryequipment.com/ and they mailed it to me.
I have never had trouble with the Brookfield one, but had a couple from the other company blew and I dobut they are good quality.

You need to buy the fitting, shade and globe, as they get hot and do not fit normal fittings.

I bought this one from brookfield for $75 http://www.brookfieldpoultryequipment.c ... d=187&r=54

I also bought this brooder from Broofield and have found it terrific http://www.brookfieldpoultryequipment.c ... d=176&r=54
It also has a temperature adjustment and you can turn it down in warm weather and as the chicks get older. I am going to buy another.

Sorry to but in but I too am looking at a new way of heating the brooder as the old globes are gone. Just wondering how much power they use over the old globes?
