Are they going to be let out to free range? If so how often and for how long?

more questions: is the pen going to be moved aroung or will it be place in a permenant position? Did the manufacturer or seller give you any advise?
Think what your view is on caged hens? Is this the lifestyle you want for your hens. Note I am happy to say a free range is a far happier hen, with the ability to scratch or flap at will. I also understand that at times is is required to reduce the space for the hen to roam. (I show my bird, so for a few weeks a year the birds if going to show are put into 800x800x800mm pens to train) I ensure they receive all the extra treats while in there including greens.

To give you an answer personally no more than 3.

Rhode Red

My answer if they are roaming in yr yard for a while each day is 2 birds – if out all day – I agree with 3

Does the area closest to the camera have a mezzanine floor? I was going to say second story, but figured that it is such a posh looking pen that mezzanine is more appropriate! Is there a perch under cover?

The reason I ask, is that if there are additional comforts such as a mezzanine and nice perch, and if you plan to move the pen onto fresh grass regularly and allow free range often, then four hens might be OK.

It IS a mighty snazzy looking house isn’t it! A neighbour has one similar that does have a mezzanine – and I never thought to ask!
