Aggresive tom.

Have a bronze tom about a year old who parades and drums all day. Getting close to the point where I will have to destroy him due to his aggressive nature. Has already had a few hard clips on the head but still launches himself at you feet first. To put him in at night have to carry a 10 ft piece of timber for protection. Any suggestions to maybe bringing him off death row or is there no hope.(has female partner who is missing her back feathers)

What about caging him with the female and once you have a few fertile eggs, put him down. I don't think you will ever stop him for being aggressive sorry.

Can you give him some quiet time - just himself perhaps in a small cage for a day or so, that often changes their mindset. Even a few hours in a darkened cage would do the trick. Unfortunately Turkeys do hold grudges if they think they have been treated disrespectfully. Sometimes just pointing an arm at them will deter them from flying at you. They are also quieter and easier to move if you wait until just on dark to put them away.

Nancy is right a change of scenery should settle him down I have been in the same boat and locked the tom in the garage for a day it taught him a little respect and although he did think about having a go at me [I could see it in his eyes] he didn't after his time in prison.

Is it possible to put blinkers on turkeys like they do on pheasants? If it is possible that would stop him having a go at you, maybe?

I am selling my two beautiful young turkey boys

. They aren't aggressive to people at all, and hang around with the flock of chickens with no problems but I can't introduce anything new. I have just bought some new call ducks and the turkeys know that they "don't belong 'round these parts" and try to stomp them.

I have found a turkey breeder in Sydney who is interested in using them for a breeding program so they are off to their new home tomorrow.

I will miss them, but would feel worse if I kept them and lost my lovely ducks if they were squashed or chased through a fence.

I did lock my boys up for a couple of days to see if that made a difference to their place in the flock, however they recognised the newbies immediately and set about trying to eradicate them! Maybe locking the turkey up for a longer period of time would help - a couple of days probably won't do it, in my opinion (with my vast experience :oops:

).

My 2 toms are very placid they don't even have a problem with the cats but the cats take off when the boys get too friendly.

Hi KevJ,

I've got the same problem with a buff gobbler,i got him secondhand with two hens and he was going into the freezer today but he's got a stay of execution till he gives me a couple of dozen of fertile eggs. No matter what you do won't stop him from going you and have been told from other breeders that it may come out in the offspring as well but i think it's how you raise them.
