$60-$70 each maybe a little higher for adult birds

I saw some advertised in perth for 120 a trio but not sure of the age

^ agree work on $100 per bird for top quality but remember none will release their very best birds - so expect to get their next best

This is our Mr Tilly we would not part with him for any amount and of the 4 poults that hatched last year [bad season due to weather] none survived compliments of a Tiger snake [smilie=a_cry.gif]

so we are hopeful this coming season will be better [yes we got the snake [smilie=a_chuckle.gif]

Do they come up much at auctions and would I budget on $100 a bird or allow for auction fever?

I have to say here = DON’T BUY ON IMPULSE

Most birds sold now would be older birds and near the end of their breeding lives or ones that have been hatched at the wrong time of year and will not grow out properly
Also – now that you have decided on the breed you want – be patient and wait for the breeding season to arrive and for the poults to grow out a bit – save what money you now have and add to it while waiting = that way you know you have enough AND you may be able to get either better quality birds or a few more than you first planned on getting and/or = have the purchase cost and transporting charges saved if you buy from out of area or interstate :-D

Pure RPs are rare at auctions and when they are sold that way they have been known to go for $150+ the highest I’ve heard of is just over $200 :shock:

I’d be inclined to buy direct from a reputable breeder anyway – that way you know you are getting pure birds – unless I knew the source I would be suspicious of any sold at auction

You will get more eggs from the first laying season but the eggs are thicker shelled and the poults can have a bit of trouble getting out – however a hen that has gone thru her 1st moult will lay almost as well and the poults rarely have trouble hatching

I currently have 3 males running together with 12 hens and it works well = gives each girl a bit of a break from those clumsy boys during mating times

but I do recommend that you have AT LEAST 2 hens to one gobbler – it isn’t fair to expect one hen to suffer constant attention from a male so much larger than her = she could possibly end up with serious skin tear injuries.
