and I will happily admit although I don't claim to be an expert ( yet

) I have put a black pekin over our buffs to improve type ,on the advice of an expert , who's a judge breeder and freind ,with good results .

I didn't think Malays breed true anyway colourwise, hence on the Showbench colour is regarded as minor point??

I also know what you mean re the colours - been stung recently when i bought some for my daughter as pets -

what hatched from those birds eggs was

albeit VERY typey

BUT there is a local electical dealer that has had Buff and nothing else his entire llife - perhaps his is one of only a few pure lines left??

I would like to come back into this [got to go to town] and stay on subject but take a left turn as there are so many aspects to be addressed here and some I can answer as I have been there done that and been acknowledged for it besides

Grasshopper, YOu may be right about the Malays, I think breeder that people are making reference too mainly has Indians (ugly things that look like body builders with feathers - apologies to all those who love indians). I guess the point was about lack of purity rather than about breed.

I have visited a few breeders about my area to check out their birds, learn a few tips, network etc but I am constantly dismayed when I arrive at the house to find chooks of a variety of breeds and colours wandering about everywhere. When I ask about how they breed them pure I am always told "We pen them up duing the breeding season". Usually there is a lack of pens to be seen. I have probably only seen 2 breeders with a good set up of pens. I often wonder if these people don't understand breeding or just don't care.
I will admit to having chooks wandering around everywhere at my place at present but they are ALL Australorps. (And the Sugar Farmer will start building pens this afternoon if it ever stops raining)

Sorry misunderstood, yes it is sad to hear these stories about people buying what they see but unfortunately upon reproduction, the results look nothing like the original stock.
I feel some people are going to the extremes to change the Standards and try to sway the "older" breeders to change their style. obviously that breed caught the owners eyes for some reasons so why change it?

Hi grasshopper I have a few colours that breed true to colour especially my whites I get 100% white each and every time they mate without fail. Mine came from my grandmother who had them many decades before she died

sounds good and sounds like you have a good line there, its always the older lines the better. These days so many lines have had other things put into them. Im slowly getting into malays, getting first purchase this weekend.

So true that's why I find it almost impossible to buy new blood as I find most is contaminated with god knows what, my grandmother would be shaking her head if she were here.

This is a good topic I have been reading for a couple of days. I can also tell you many stories about pekins that pop out liquorish allsorts but you have all heard it before. I have recently read about the trend to mass colour breed and although it’s not that wide spread it is a shame we may be losing the STD colours. Pat on the back to the breeders that do the right thing and control breed well done to you.
