As I knew would happen my barnies started laying when I was away Camping over Easter. They are almost 6 months old now. The eggs make such a nice contrast to the others I get. First few are small, around 45grams, but I know they will get bigger. :-D
Check out this picture with a light Sussex egg for comparison.

Good work Johs, that egg on the far right has some nice colour, do you have any pics of your birds, love to see them. I've got about thirty barnie girls at the moment, not to mention too many cockerels (some too good to knock on the head).

Thanks purefeather. More good luck than good management.
I have some photo's but it's when they were much younger. I will take some tomorrow and post them.

Here you go purefeather. I only have three of them. Couple of different angles.
Such pretty girls. Don't know how 'good' they are compared to the standard but I like 'em. :-D

Barnie breeders would kill for birds with such delightful lacing, again keep up the good, no, great work.

Congrats on your first Barnie eggs, I am waiting rather impatiently for a couple of my Barnies to start laying. They are just beautiful girls Johs, I am very jealous. Lacing looks to be very good. Not that I know that much about Barnies but I have a few and they are nowhere near the quality of yours, the lacing, type and colour on yours would beat mine hands down.
I have been trying to track down some good quality birds but have not had much luck so far. I can't send you a message (can't see how to do so, maybe I haven't made enough posts) do you mind if I email you to ask about them?
Cheers
Kylie

Hi johs wave.gif
I am very impressed with your Barnies. I will be on the lookout for some later this year when we move to Tassie, I will be looking for utility birds not show birds so anyone out there in Tassie with good utility Barnies please take note and keep me in mind.

Regards

Thanks Guys. I was really lucky. Found a supplier of fertile eggs in Gippsland who had heaps of different breeds and was happy to mail me some. Sadly due to family health problems she doesn't sell eggs anymore. They hope to in the future so fingers crossed. I have an Australorp from the last batch of eggs i purchased, she's at a friends place. Only one to survive after some bad broody and incubator issues. th_Noooo.gif

The lady I got my first three girls off (plymouth Rocks), who is now a friend of mine, :-D suggested I put the best one of them in the Geelong Show. They are a bit flightier than my other girls so don't know how they would like that. She also has a nice Barnie rooster that she's holding onto for me so I can take the girls out for a visit and get some eggs to incubate. I live in the suburbs so a rooster isn't practical for me.

Kylie - I am happy for you to email me but I think I may have answered one of your questions above. :( Feel free to email me anyway.
Ian - That's a big move. Qld to Tassie. I'll be in Tassie later this year to pick up my new puppy. th_clap.gif Good luck finding some nice new birds.

cheers,

Jo

Ian have you heard of Paul Healy, Tassie breeder. That's all I can find at the moment. A thought, are you allowed to take fertile eggs over on the plane or boat?

Hi Purefeather wave.gif

Yes I saw him on the SBS program Gourmet Farmer with his Barnies. I shall contact him when the time gets a little closer. He also writes on chooks in the ABC Organic Gardner magazine.

Regards
