Understanding colour breeding. What book would you recommend I should buy that will give me a good understanding of colour breeding in plain English? Thanks for reading and thanks for any recommendations offered.

One I've found that explains in laymans terms and gives examples is by Carefoot, he was an English breeder and it is laid out in a form to get your head around and understand.
Others may have suggestions and perhaps more up to date titles that may be of help and interest.

Oaklands is that Creative Poultry Breeding by W C Carefoot? I tried to buy this book but out of stock?

Yes, that's the one.
Had a blank moment when I was posting and could not remember the full title, Thanks.
Last I heard it was in a reprint and that the author had passed away.
You could be lucky on E-bay or 2nd hand book suppliers, there a number I've seen specialising on Poultry and livestock books.
It is a good read and handy to have on hand to refer back to.

I have a fantastic book called Genetics of chicken colours - the basics by Sigrid vandort & David Hancox.

I have found it easy to read and understand.

W C Carefoots book is excellent and is the bible for all decent breeders. I have read on another forum that some person called ruff is attacking the credibility of this great man and I find it disgusting, he or she need to put their manners back in and try learning about poultry and respect for those that know what they are talking about. Sorry for the rant but I found their comment very offensive.

I don't have the book but once got it out from the library and yes I found it excellent and will be buying it when it is back in stock

Hey SETTLE, if you read ruff's post, she actually says she loves the book and found one tiny paragraph that she thinks is not correct. There is discussion about that para and my assessment is that the book is probably largely correct but in that one tiny little particular example, due to some uncommon gene interactions, there may be an exception in a narrow set of circumstances. Ruff has certainly not attacked 'the credibility of this great man'. Informed review of literature is part of how knowledge advances.

Both the Carefoot and the van Doort books are excellent, both do have some slight inaccuracies, but that is probably the case with all publications.

That is not how I read it and I stick with my first comments. I have been contacted by some people since and now know more about this person ruff and it all fits. Some people have too much time on their hands and an empty kettle.

So again, W C Carefoots book is excellent and is the bible for all decent breeders.

Broady, I think you should go take it up with Ruff yourself in the other forum where the post is.
