Do Debeaked Rescued Hen's Beak's Grow Back???

Someone left 2 debeaked POL Isa Browns on our door step for me to take under my wing and love and take care of. Poor girls don't have a proper beak

How are they supposed to eat and preen themselves properly I ask?

I have been feeding them mashed up hard boiled egg and mashed up wet layer pellets, they don't seem to know how to eat the free range mix or can't eat it because of their beaks

I really don't know.

They make these sad cluckly noises that really breaks

my heart. I know who ever left them meant well, meaning that I could give them a good home, and I appreciated that they thought so, but it is really hard, because we can get into trouble. We have too many chookies

Can anyone one tell me if their beaks will grow back and what should I be feeding them???

OMG PP!

You're a new mum.

My Isa Becky has been badly debeaked and she does cope really well, I must say.

At first I was really concerned but I just made sure she could dive her beak into the feed cause she can't pick stuff up normally like other chooks.

They really have been left in the best hands.

Lucky, lucky chooks.

Dont forget to quarantine them PP (but I'm sure that is like preaching to the preacher)

I'm not 100% sure but I doubt they grow back. If they were being debeaked in a commercial situation I think it would be for life. But of course they have a much shorter lifespan commercially so perhaps clipping once is sufficient.

Most annoying!

They are in a hutch at the moment safe from the not so fantastic Mr. Fox, the boys, not too sure that they would know what to do or not to do they rather clueless, don't want to upset the status quo with Lady Frances and The Pretty, also don't need them picking up any nasties, and don't want to traumatise these poor girls any further, and safe from the elements, it really cold and wet down here at the moment.

I know that they have a shorter life span and prone to all sorts of mass egg production problems, but for the moment that they are in my care I want them to have the best possible care.

Debeaking should be banned along with caged hens, I mean some dog breeds aren't aloud to have their tails docked anymore, so equal rights for chooks!

Yes I agree PP. It should be banned.

On a seperate note I have heard that sometimes they do grow a little bit back (not all the way back) but it really depends on how badly they are debeaked to start with.

I gave Becky her name because she was badly debeaked & rather than calling her Beaky, I though Becky sounded better. She sometimes turns her head upside downd to eat, it's really funny when you see her eating upside down.

But she's adapted. Yours will too!

Sadly, we couldn't keep The Beaky's (inspired by Chicka-Dee's Beaky/Becky), we had too many chooks as the boys are still here. They have gone to live on the farm with The Lavender Gang, they will have a good life there.

my Caramel, has obviously had been debeaked by one of her previous owners...
she stil hasn't repaired, and is a shy chook.
make sure they get out in the day, they will never be normal hens, their beaks as I found out don't grow back (as fast) when tey are older, when they are still growing up the beaks can grow back, but after, the beaks may take 2 years... good thing your hen's beaks are still mostly there (as far as I can see)
I ave seen some where their beaksare less than 2cm long! when they should be 4!
(when they get that bad it hurts the chok each time they peck, so it's better to put them down...

I can't them and the boys and my two hens

My boys are going to a good home soon and keeping them and the Beaky's and my hens just isn't possible

Im sure they will be happy there. Luckily you know someone who can keep taking all your chookies that you can't keep.

I took a photo of my Beck Beck today and have posted it so you can see how her beak is and how she eats upside-down.

She's just the loveliest bird and is one of the best layers of all my chookies.

Chicka_Dee, for posting the photos of Becky, she has a very determined look upon her face. She is very fortunate to have you as her mother hen.

The Beaky's beaks were so short and mutilated, it's just not fair that someone can do these barbaric things to one of God's living and breathing creatures

They were so friendly and so gentle the short time they were with us. I really wish that they could have stayed :cry:

The boys are waiting for their new home and life is too complicated

Things happen at the wrong time, but when is the right time??? Everything always seems to happen when they are not supposed to
