I just had to share...My lovely hens, that i had all the problems with at the start of the year have been laying eggs for a while now, but all the eggs have been quite small, around the 40-55g mark. But yesterday, I found a huge 90 g egg in the nest, and another one today. I wonder if it is my speckled sussex, or plymouth rocks? Anyway, just had to share the joy, and ask, what is the heaviest/biggest egg you have ever had from a hen?

 now that is big! Are you sure it's not a double yolker?

congt334 Kellie and egch6678 ,

Lady Frances has laid two whoppers, one 106 grams and recently 110 grams. Here is the thread with pictures of the eggs on the scales.

I have one chook that lays quite a few double-yolkers and one large one I took to the post office a couple of weeks ago to have weighed. (Yes, there was a queue behind me all interested in the weight too) It was 90gms/3oz. A few days later she had one even bigger which I weighed on my old balance scales. It was well over 3oz but just short of 3.5oz/105gm, so would have been 100-102gms.

Lucky is a really special girl!

You can get good digital scales for under $20 at Kmart or BigW, the Tupperware ones are over priced, my mum won them in a competition but says she would spend $100 on them.

I haven't cracked them open yet to see if they are double yolkers, but I am interested to see if this will be her regular sized egg, or this is an eggnomily. [smilie=a_chuckle.gif]

90gms is a huge egg kelliecat. She might lay more big eggs than the others, but some days just a normal size. Anyway, you'll soon find out, and it's exciting to find them each day isn't it. [smilie=a_cookiemonster.gif]

Mum told me that when i was young, she got an egg that was 120g. It had 2 ridges in it where it looked like the chook had 3 goes at laying it. Poor hen!

This seems to be the world's largest chicken egg.

Largest Chicken Egg - World record set in China

SUIHUA, Heilongjiang Province, China -- Zhang Yinde, an employee of the Forestry Bureau of Suiling County, owns an ordinary hen which laid a 6.3 centimeters wide and 9.2 cm long egg, and weighed 201 grams, three times heavier than an ordinary egg-setting the world record for the Largest Chicken Egg.

The Largest Chicken Egg it's been kept in the refrigerator of the owner. Zhang told Xinhua that the Largest Chicken Egg looks like any other, except that its shell is a bit rough.

"The heroine hen is a super mother. She laid three other big eggs previously and once laid four eggs within one day," Zhang said. Zhang got the hen as a "bonus" when he bought 10 other chickens from a breeder. The other chickens have since ended up on Zhang's dinner table.

The hen has an unusual source of food. "She loves to walk around my dog's kennel. I guess she's been stealing the dog's food," Zhang said.
