Last weekend I picked up two 8 week old Welsummer chicks. I have them in a large crate with my cat carrier stuffed with straw bedding for them to sleep in.
The poor little things are so scared, its been 5 days now and they dont seem to be settling at all. I go and sit and talk to them each day but it doesnt seem to be helping.
My other chooks are all older laying hens and are not interested in them.
How do I help these two chickies become more secure. I sit with them a couple of times a day and am always working in the garden close by.

hide: the poor little sweeties. Chookies are creatures of habit and their whole world has been turned upside down. New people, new room with a new view and they are full of uncertainty. You are doing the right thing. Spend time with them, cuddle them, talk to them and feed them some treats. They love silverbeet and other greens. Maybe they don't like straw either. One of my girls scratches it out of the nest box and then out into the pen. Maybe you could try wood shavings. Could you free range the old girls with the newbies for a couple of hours. Keep an eye on them just to make sure they aren't hurt by the older girls.

Good luck, I am sure they will settle in soon. They just need time and to trust you.

They are so small I couldnt possible let them free range yet. They would take off, I live on a farm with no fence to keep them in. They run like quail.
