Yesterday afternoon I got the fright of my life when my mare threw an egg at me and it smashed on the concrete floor of the stable in front of me.

As I let my sussex freerange the property they are often in the stable and I have never worried about it before as it has not been a problem. I let them out of their pen when I have finished the stables around 9.00am to 9.30am and some have already laid in the nesting box. I put my horses hay in their hayfeeders in the morning to save me time in the afternoon when my horses are impatient to go to bed.

It would appear that one of my lovely girls has taken to laying in my mare and foals hay feeder. When my mare got hold of the biscuit of hay to turf it out on the floor (which she does everyday, don't know why I bother, should just chuck it on the floor in the first place) the egg my sussex girl had laid in her feeder went flying through the air at me landing on the concrete in front of me.

What a strange place for her to lay as it is quite high at the top where I put the hay in and would have taken her quite a climb to get up there and in to the top of the hay feeder. My sussex are big girls so it would be a real effort for her.

They often lay in the hay shed as I leave the door to the shed open. But I know this and do the rounds of the shed every afternoon after putting them away.

Does anyone else have hens that lay in strange places? Aren't they wonderful little creatures?

I have had a hen lay on top of the washing machine in a pile of cloths that were only left there for a few hours, true story.

My cross bred chicken(the veranda chicken) laid an egg in one of the herb pots around 1.5 metres high which is situated next to the back door of the house. I thought it was quite sweet, but my nan didn't  :-?

In my son's car seat, after leaping through the open window. Lucy was very indignant when I wouldn't let her sit on it there!

I had one hen who insisted on laying on my daughters bed she'd sneak
in everyday.
And another who layed under the bed if she could get in or at the door if she couldn't
Funny critters
