It's a great idea to see if you can find a chicken buddy close by and you can take care of each others' chickens when you're away, We are too far away to take up the offer, but I hope someone replies that is close by.

I have certainly left them for two days and just locked up in their coop and run which is protected. They may be bored, but not in danger. One thing I suggest is, regardless of how much you trust the water supply, always put in two. On rare ocassions my lubing cup fails and all the water flows out. That would be disastrous if I was away over a hot weekend, so I always leave a second big bowl in the shade, too heavy for them to knock over. Gives me peace of mind.

My Mum is my pet sitter. She comes to stay at my place and looks after everyone. Cats, chickens & Fish. The dog comes with me. :-D

If I go somewhere with mum I have several people to look after the chickens. One who has his own and we help each other out and another who's a HUGE egg lover and is happy to help out for as many eggs as she can get. wee.

Another friend drops in to look after the cats. Not sure what I'd do if I couldn't take the dog. :-?

Last time a few years back my parents came and watched them. I bribed them with all the eggs they were going to lay. Funny thing was they missed us (well sounded good) lol. They stopped laying the whole week and didn't start again till we'd been back a few days.

This time round for weekend I'd probably leave them locked up. We have their water set up on a gravity fed automatic system.

I have a sister that lives 5 mins away so she takes care of all the pets and I do the same when she's away with the family

We use Aussiehousesitters.com.au...google Aussie House Sitters...they are fab..used them several times..amazing how many people go from house to house....costs nothing and you pick animal lovers and check references..you as the home owner need to register and the sitter needs to provide financial records and references etc...some couples we had go up and down the coast working from their laptop just looking for a place to stay long or short term..we also have two cats and a dog and have been so lucky to come back to a clean happy household...

I recently went to a "reputable breeder" who said he looked after peoples chickens for $5 per chicken per day. I then asked him to show me where he looks after the people's chickens, and he showed me this 2m x 2m x 2m "cell", and I nearly cried on the spot. [smilie=a_cry.gif]

Then he had to briefly walk away & I saw that 3 of the chickens in the pen were dead (& stiff & being pecked at by the other chickens) & when I pointed out to him that the chickens in the pen were dead he said "jeez those breeds are normally tougher"!

I was so horrified I think I left skid marks on his driveway getting out of there....and his driveway was dirt!!!!

Beware of leaving your babies with people, as it can lead to disaster & tears!

Cheers
Chicka-Dee
