Hey wave.gif

My Rooster has only just started being a "big boy" recently, but that got me to thinking..... conf665

How long before he is considered past his prime?.......AND.......

How many girls is too many for the 1 rooster?, will his performance be affected if he a lot of girls? Will he suffer with his performance?

Cheers
Chicka-Dee

Good question

I was told roosters are best from age 3 and peak by age 5 but my best rooster for breeding is 7 so it could depend on the type of rooster

Hmm I dunno about that- too be honest I haven't kept one rooster for more than a year! I keep selling them off and getting new ones... I have no idea why.......

up to 6 hens for soft feather and 9 for hard

roosters are in prime at avout 2-2.5 years and not much good when they are past 6 years

Depends on the breed

Definitely depends on the breed. I have Polish. I use a rooster the next season after he hatches. I usually expect to get two seasons out of a rooster.

I have a rhode island rooster that is 9 years old and his fertility is as good as it was when he was 2 or 3 100% all eggs fertile so yes really depends on the breed

Thanks guys for the info, deeply appreciate it [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

My Clyde is a Speckled Sussex & is just learning, so I don't think his fertility rate would be real great at the moment. I was watching him yesterday & he fell off one of the girls as he is having a hard time learning how to balance on the girls back. [smilie=a_rolling.gif]

He's a big boy for his age & the girls are quite little compared to him so I think he's got a lot of learning to do before his success rate would be considered great.

I would say he definitely needs a few years of practice before he gets great at this, so I can understand when you say 2-2.5 years, and its wonderful news if he'd still be going at age 9 wee.

He's just learning how to take them unawares. He stands around looking like his incognito then he just launches at them and grabs their neck feathers & hopes he gets one to stay long enough. One little screech from the girls & he lets them go running in the opposite direction. It's really funny to watch. [smilie=a_rolling.gif]

Cheer
