That's the site I return to each time I want to re-read the standards.

Good work Bunyanut. $80 for that pair of australorp pullets - tell him he's dreamin'. You wouldn't have even got off the blocks without $100 and you can blame your auctioneer mate for that.
I am currently reading some old books. One is Hadlington's Australian Poultry Book. First published in '43 it features a fair bit about early australorps and I think you should probably add James Hadlington to your list.

A quote from the book that I enjoyed: (In regards to systems of breeding):

"...improvement can only come from enlightened judgement in selection, and such judgement can only be the outcome of a mastery of the details of the requirements that constitute the breed..."

Looking forward to catching you all at the titles or wherever. I may even be able to do Bunyanut here a deal on something cheaper with a crook head [smilie=a_rolling.gif] (no promises though).

Cheers, Tiger

Yrrrrrrr have to be in it to win it , but I Didn't even get a Start [smilie=a_rolling.gif] I liked the Larger of the two best , But had a pen ready for the other one , I reckon I couldv'e stretched the budget a little bit , But was happy for the Both Parties anyway , (curse that actioneer in My best Freddy Impersonation) , They're Scratchin around with a Good Holton Cockbird now so that's all that Matters ,and Maybe one day the'll even be able to afford one of mine ;) , But I reckon's I might just have to put my price up ,So I can afford to buy at Gatton next year ;) I'll see ya at the titles and Thats a Promise ;) Might even take a few down this year 8)

While I think of it .... the article in the above link makes reference to 'Jim O'malley' and says Jim is still alive today , Unfortanately he passed away last year aged 90 years. Jim was a showman, breeder and judge of poultry since the 1930s and was a true gentleman .

He won many Sydney Royals and it was his Australorp cockerel that was selected in 1949 to be photographed and used as the "perfect" specimen for the now famous standards meeting convened by Hadlington in that year.

Nice article Bunyanut but how on earth did the discussion below it turn into tenderising muscovies??
Was it australorps or muscovies towelling up the fellow's leghorns?
My australorps are really good natured, they have their peck order, naturally, but they would rather roam around the grass and chase insects or sun themselves than worry about squabbling. I do have a couple of pullets that think my toes could be turned into a nice meal. single pluggers probably aren't the most appropriate wear in my chook pen/paddock anyway.

Cheers, Tiger
