So......been thinking.......i have five chickens, one of which is a minute old english game hen the size of a walnut and my pen is 5 metres by about 3.5 metres...girls are free ranged daily off and on....my question is after my last two joined my original three Isa Browns I went through hell watching them bullied..now that calm is restored is it wise to add two rescue battery hens just because I can....is that wise or just plain madness??...I am a sucker I know....xxx advice please....i treat them like princesses and they all deserve it ...

Hi Doolan wave.gif

Introducing more members to the family is always hard as it involves watching the newbies being "put in their place" by the existing flock, but if rescuing some hens from a life of misery & torture means your family has to go through another adjustment period, then I say it's worth it. :-D

After all, they have you as their support system [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

Cheers

A.P.F is better than Facebook, you have an entire chookie community here for social networking!

Have you got a separate coop perhaps to keep the rescue hens in so they can adjust to life on the outdside, let there feathers grow back? It may be easier for them to adjust to the outside world rather than be put in with the others. Also I believe in quarantining any new poultry before introducing them to an existing flock. Then perhaps you can introduce them to the others whilst they are free ranging and have more space.

Yes was thinking this very thing at 3 am....excitement I think....but it would be easy to get a smaller A Frame set up in the yard as quarantine...then perhaps slip them quietly in one bedtime....what is quarantine time for these poor souls do you think? Search begins today......... wee.

10-14 days up to 4 weeks for quarantine, have a look on eBay or Gumtree, maybe you could pick up a 2nd hand coop.

My husband is a handy man so no probs there...but explaining why i want them will be an issue, especially after my three Isa Browns were like the Spice Girls, so nasty to my latest two...really evil...but good now.......so slower transition next time.....

Give me time to worm and get them fitter too...

Love a handy hubby [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif] , mine's a builder :-D

Definitely sounds like you've been bitten by the chicken bug! [smilie=a_rolling.gif]

Me I just show up with them. I started with 4 & then I had 5 & then 6 & now I have 12 wee.

I'm at my council's limit now, but surely what they don't know won't hurt them, if I get maybe one more [smilie=a_rolling.gif]

Lucky you...

Had a dinner tonight with friends..one of which was an engineer working on air conditioning for KFC poultry production ten years back.....the horror stories i just heard not 30 minutes ago has left my bubble burst..

Feel so down now that i can only save two hens......

Feel like going and waking the chooks for a cuddle....shame.

Pfft....
