if you want eggs don't go for pekis, they will lay 3-4 small eggs a week but after a few weeks they go broody, and if you try to de-brood them they are broody again in a few weeks.

regards youri.

can't agree, first of all NO hen can lay two eggs in one day (unless she gets egg bond and then lays two the day after), what are you feeding your birds? i have hens go broody when there are NO eggs in the nest.

are these pekins your taking about pure? it sounds like they may be crosses.

regards youri.

Personally I would go for Pekin's.I have 2 here and they are adorable. My 2 squeeze out of the pen everyday and when they hear the back door open they come running up to me with a little cackle.Sometimes they are waiting at my back door with my dogs as well.Though my 2 have not been very good layers at all but I dont mind that at all as I have the bigger chooks for that.

I have both pekins and silkies. Silkies feathers are not waterproof so must be kept under cover and on dry ground always in wet weather. They can be a nervous chook. Pekins are much more friendly but again due to the feathered legs a problem in the wet and must be kept dry although their feathers at least do repel the rain. Both are incline to go broody after only a dozen or so eggs.

As it is your first venture into chooks I think a clean legged bantam would be best. I would imagine you are only going to keep girls in the beginning. If you get young birds about 12 weeks old and with patience and lots of treats you will soon have any chook eating out of the kids hands. So yes your rhode island red bantam but perhaps australorp bantams as they are a more productive egg layer and asutralorps do have nice temperaments.

Good luck with your new venture.

bantam australorps are very hardy, and docile, they have clean legs, which can be beneficial if the chook pen gets muddy, and they start laying at about 5 months of age, they don't seem to go broody very often
