Ok so pekins aren't perhaps the best choice. Unfortunately, we all like pekins very much, and the area in which they would be kept is dry always. But since we don't eat a lot of eggs, maybe they would be a good choice...? When you say they go broody after 12 eggs, is that after they've laid twelve eggs or after they have laid 12 eggs and been allowed to keep them? If not pekins, then maybe Rhode Island Whites/reds would be a better option.

12 eggs is an approx. and they go broody whether you leave the eggs there or not. I have one girl lays about 6 eggs and goes broody and she is the one I want all the eggs I can get to breed from in my colour breeding program. Pekins are beautiful birds and just so friendly. If your pen is nice and dry in wet weather the go for them. They love to be picked up, cuddles, push around in doll prams. You name I think kids have just about done any thing with them once they get to know you.

After considering it, I think Pekins are best. With broodies though, (just out of curiosity), do they get really nasty like silkies, or do they peck you or what? How do you get the eggs from them? And how long do they stay broody for? Also are they good mums, i.e. if you put bought eggs under them will they immediately incubate or what?

they are great mums one of the best.
i have a hen that has laid two dozen and not been broody, but yes a dozen is a approx.

when they go broody you will need to de-brood them, they would stay broody for months.

How do you debrood them?

put them in a wire bottomed cage withno bedding so they can't settle down and get the under part warm. After about 3 days they have stopped being broody.

a much easyer way is to just put ice cubs under her, then just replace the hay in the nesting box.

Personally I'd go with Belgian d'Uccle's.

Having had both Pekins and d'Uccle's here I found the d'Uccle's a better natured bird in the end.

My d'Uccle's outdid the Pekins in both laying and nature.

Both breeds come in an amazing aray of colours yet the d'Uccle nature (whilst at times you can get a nasty one) is calmer in my opinion......and they are small enough for small children to easily handle.

I wouls vote for Silkies but with my name on here that won't supprise but a close second would have to be Belgian d'Uccles also and I have to agree with their nature
