I have a question regarding the loss of feathered legs on marans. The original marans as we know had feathered legs but all that I see are clean legged, particularly with pullets and hens. Is there specialist out there still following and breeding the original feather legged marans? Also have we retained the original chocolate eggs? The only eggs I have seen were from two hens at a show, both in different show pens and they were both light brown not the very dark brown they are supposed to be?

G'day Pixie-Pullets, I'm afraid I don't know of any Maran breeders I can only hope some people have taken it upon themselves to recreate the breed. With regard to leg feathering I'd like to quote Ian Kay who wrote the book "Stairway to the Breeds ". Quote; The point regarding feathered legs warrants further mention. Over here (Britain) we have selected clean legged Marans and feathered legged North Holland Blues, but the continent have done the reverse for some reason. End of quote. So maybe you were looking at the British version. He also mentions that the brown egg was probably a result of the Croad Langshan being used in it's makeup.
Hope this helps.

I have both feathered and clean I favor the clean for simple hygiene but properly groomed the feather legs can appealing. I am surprised to read you don't have feather legged marans or did I miss something

I have thought about getting marans but not sure if they are more work than my austalorps being their rare I would need to breed them to keep up the hens to replce the older ones. Are they a broody breed?

Pixie-pullets & purebreds what countries do you live in?
The original French Marans were feather legged meat birds, when Cuckoo Marans were imported into the UK in the late 1920 they were bred to both Light Sussex & Barred Rocks to make day old sexing of hatch down easier, this also removed the leg feathering.
After over 30 years of research I have never seen a cleaned shanked British Marans in Australia, many supposed to be but never the real thing. These birds were last recorded in WA in the mid to late 1960s.
The French Marans in Australia are Wheatens. Some other colours are being developed but not yet ready. The Wheaten Marans are generally non-broody.

There were a good number at the FMCA National Show last year at Yass, NSW . They were also at numerous Royals, Vic Rare Breeds, Fairfied Rare breeds, and other PC shows.
