I have some japanese bantam eggs hatching soon and I have read someware about different leg length in japanese bantams? Some from the same hatchings have short legs and some have long? I believe I have only seen short leg but not certain as I have to my knowledge not seen long legged. Is this a genetic thing? If so can someone explain it?

I can't help you with the genetic side of things but have you tried sourcing the various poultry standards, ie;oz,us,british etc.?

Hi Solomon,
Hope I can explain it for you.
The exhibition Jap has one short legged gene, the legs are short so as to be low to the ground, with correct wing setting and placement the wing tips touch the ground. This is the correct leg length and when combined with correct type and stance the tail is almost erect, carried higher than the head, short cobby body and wings set low as to brush the ground. The correct exhibition Jap bantam is a showy, alert and robust fowl that shows itself to advantage at all times.
When you mate these short legged fowls together you will get a % of chicks in a ratio of 1:2:1, ie 1 long leg (no short leg gene), 2 exhibition short leg (have one short leg gene) and 1 that usually dies in shell as it has 2 short leg genes and is unable to hatch, if it does it dies soon after as the short leg gene when pure is a lethal gene.
It is a gene that has to be constantly observed and monitored so as to be able to produce exhibition fowls and avoid dead in shell.
To do this some breeders keep exceptional typed long leg fowls (those that excel in all other traits but are just longer on leg) and mate to equally good short legged birds, this way you get a 50:50 ratio of long leg & exhibition fowls and avoid the losses of the dead in shell. Some have observed that an exceptional exhibition male can have difficulty mating and so are not as fertile, so by mating exhibition females to an outstanding long legged male you get good fertility and a number of progeny to select from.
However if you really wish to produce numbers of progeny you will need to utilise the long legged females and mate these to the best exhibition males available and trust that he is able to successfully mate and produce offspring, this can be achieved by running only a small number (2 or 3 at most) of long legged females to each male and by only putting him in to mate late in the day every 2nd or 3rd day, this way he is keen and persists until he successfully treads the hens.
You cannot breed an exhibition short legged fowl from 2 with long legs.
Hope this helps to clarify and is of some assistance.
