Why Rare Breeds?

There are many reasons I keep rare breeds and why fanciers all over the world gravitate towards them. Here are some of these:

Their beauty - generally they are more attractive, have different feathering and interesting shapes.

Their history - often rare breeds can be traced back centuries, have an interesting story full of intrigue.

Their personality - they have unique characteristics specific to their development. They endear themselves to their owners.

Their egg colour - these range from blue to white to plum. No two breeds are the same.

The challenge - some people like me enjoy the unique challenges that these breeds throw up

The collector factor - rare books, rare stamps, rare wine, so why not rare chooks?

Finally, I collect them because I want to do my bit to save the gene pool of these magnificent birds whose diverse and valuable genetic influence has created the mass-produced hybrid varieties that boringly dominate the poultry landscape. Given the choice of having a bird that will lay the same amount of eggs over a longer period or an Isa Brown which Barastoc recommend culling every 18 months - I know what I will choose every time!

Yes there are Marans, but they are not common.

There was a time when people with them were accused of illegal imports, but nothing was substantiated and they are legal to own.

I dont have any, but will be after some eggs to start my own flock soon.

They certainly seem to be becoming more common. Whether you are buying a 'real' maran or someone's version of it remains to be seen I would imagine. I'd be asking lots of questions and asking for photos of stock and eggs to be on the safe side.

There was a recent thread on here with a 'heated discussion' on whether they should have clean legs or not.
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=8316&p=83797&hilit=maran+clean#p83797

I did a quick search on farmstock classifieds and there was one ad:
Speckled Susssex, Marans & Cream Legbar Pullets. Vaccinated. Also some pretty back yard bantams. All $10 each. Some cockerels also available. - To reply to this advertisement email debspoultry@hotmail.com

I also came across these on another website:
mlock@megalink.com.au
Due to ill health I am selling some of my Purebreed breeding stock.
TRIOS
L/Sussex $120.00
RIR $120.00
Wheaten Marans available in 6 wks $200

The Footscray Poultry Club [at Bacchus Marsh] Poultry Auction Sunday 27th February 2011 has some Maran X Cockerals (from dark egg stock) available.

Also: Fertile French Wheaten Marans Eggs. $5 an egg + postage
Message: I have limited numbers of fertile pure bred French Wheaten Marans pullet eggs available over the next week or so until I am ready to collect for my next setting. $5 an egg + express postage so they reach you fresh as possible. The rooster and pullets are from separate breeders (so not brother and sisters). First in best dressed. I can take orders also for a few weeks away. I have French Wheaten Marans cross Barnevelder too at $4 an egg. Please email us at thechookpatch@optusnet.com.au. Pictures of our eggs are on our little webpage at thechookpatch.yolasite.com

There is another link to a very interesting Marans discussion which Im sure you would have found interesting but this forum doesn't allow me to link to it. You can pm me if you are interested...

Lastly this is a link to the French Maran Club of Australia - I'm sure they could lead you in a genuine direction:

There are two breeds of Marans, the feather shanked French & the clean shanked British. The British Marans, although in the current Standard, were last seen in the mid 1960s at the Perth Royal. A Victorian breeder is currently selling bantam Cuckoo Marans, but they lay white eggs so beware.
French Marans have been in Australia since the late 1940s but efforts to breed them up has only taken place in the last few years. Currently the only colour fully established is the original Wheaten.
Anyone interested in Marans could contact the Secretary of the French Marans Club Australia ,Paul Rodgers buffcochin@gmail.com
There are breeders of French Marans in all States & Territories except the NT

I know someone who knows someone who is trying to breed them.
She was saying the chicks haven't been very hardy and have had a high mortality rate.
I was interested until I heard that. Maybe when they are hardier.
I thought $30 a dozen wasn't a bad price for eggs but $60 wow. Too rich for me.

my comments are based solely on what I see as the obvious and not meant to offend or defame any person or persons

DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU BUY ANYTHING = the Maran lay a dark brown egg [and varying shades of dark brown] that has a thick shell AND membrane the membrane being similar in consistency and thickness to that of the turkey egg = I’ve eaten Maran eggs so I know how thick the membrane is. Not sure as I don’t own them but I think the best test would be the egg – when you go to view the birds ask for some eggs so that you can examine them and then break one open

I have not had any problems with mine. Fertility has always been good, hatch ability on a par with other breeds of large fowl & bantams that I have kept. Only rearing loss (1) was due to a Sparrow hawk.

No, results from posted eggs can be very poor due to Aust Post handling. I may have some young birds about Nov
