Phoenix Bantams

I am contemplating getting Phoenix Bantams, but thought before I actually buy them I should ask the experience people for any advice or wisdom on keeping and breeding them as well do they need any special requirement? never had them beore so need plenty of advice please

I have never had any but from infomation that i have read you will want a really good pen setup if you want the roosters tail to be kept in good condition.
I would have a fully enclosed shedwith windows (and with good ventilation of course) this is so that the shed stays very dry.(i have herd sand is best to use as a flooring)i would also have some high perches around 6ft of the ground and run them on a neat lawn to allow them to get outside.
If you dont want the big tail just cut it and keep him like you would any other rooster.

No such thing as Phoenix bantams – they are just Phoenix [even though they are bantam size :-D

I keep my PHX in a shed that has good ventilation but is able to be closed in Winter as they DO NOT like the intense cold. Perches of varying heights from 3 to 8ft all are smooth so tails don’t get damaged and they are small enough that the bird’s feet can grasp them easily. Make sure the nesting boxes are at abt 5ft as they prefer to lay well off the ground and use wood chips or rice hulls in nesting boxes, do not use hay or chaff as this encourages lice and mites etc

Clean their water containers every day. Feed lots of and a variety of green food. Have pellets available 24/7/365 and give mixed grain scattered on the floor of the pen every afternoon [small amounts so they scratch and turn over the deep litter] they can have small amounts of bread but I personally don’t recommend it in the warmer weather as it sits as fat – thru winter is fine as the fat will help keep them warm. Remember to keep them warm thru winter

Mine do very well and are tame to the point they jump down off perches onto my shoulders and head when I am in the shed. 2 girls like to be carried on my hand over to their sleeping perch each night :-D

Not many of us show them
Longest tail to date in my pen is 2mts aged 18months :-D

but I did accidentally stand on it one day :shock:

and most of the feathers pulled out

growing back well but the new growth is only at 1.2mts atm

A 5mt tail takes 5-7yrs to grow that long and most don’t due to damage
Overseas they tend the birds like they are celebrities and most roosters are kept on perches to safe guard the tails

We Aussies are much more 'laid back/lazy' when it comes to our PHX

Also you have to have pure or near pure to achieve the length

Do you by chance have any pictures of the longtails I have seen many pictures but all are from japan and I would love to see some pictures from australia

Dasher – your first post here isn’t one introducing yrself - you might want to go into ‘New Members Introductions’ and do so, as some, perhaps most, will read this 1st post as
‘Hi I’m new and only joined because I was told [or read] abt someone that has long tailed PHX and I want pictures’

That in itself isn’t odd to me as a few new members have joined after reading or being told about a post in APF and wanting to see pictures – I just hope you stick around and contribute in the future.

I am happy to supply pictures but atm I do not put them into any forum I am a member of –
