We've lost a few to Mareks (my favorite chicken/rooster got it), pretty horrible to see them with it. We usually take them down to the vet when we see the symptoms the put the to sleep (and the vet confirms it's mareks). It's always hard though, it always seems to be our favorite chickens that get it :P

Hi Stuart, Yes a vaccine will not help as it's a preventative not a cure.

Thanks

I only just expanded my flock on the weekend, purchasing some more pure breds, then on Monday my Langshan rooster approx 12 weeks old who i hatched here has gone in the legs. He just sits there, resting on one side. My whole flock was hatched here on the farm, i have about 50 young chicks including my newly purchased Favorelles, Australorps, Wyandottes, and the Langshans i've had since xmas time. I'm REALLY worried about my pure breds, is there any way to tell th difference between the disease and the deficiency, the vets up here don't seem to have a clue about chickens. PLEASE HELP?

Hi luvmychooks,

Sorry to hear about your rooster - hopefully it's not Marek's.

The most important thing is to isolate the new birds from your young ones, and also isolate any of your young ones (apart from the rest of your flock and the new birds) that show symptoms of any illness. Quarantining seems to be so important.

Somebody with more experience may be able to offer more information on the differences. Sudden onset does sound a bit suspicious. I haven't had first-hand experience with Marek's - I had a young pullet who "went in the legs" but she just sat back on her haunches rather than lay down with legs out to the side. She has recovered pretty well (took a couple of months) so not sure if hers was rickets or an injury - shouldn't have been Marek's as she was vaccinated with the other young ones as a day-old.

Good luck with your birds.

Deb
