Hi All

I have finally joined my local poultry club - they are awesome :-) Apparently I couldn't have joined at a better time as there are a lot of local shows happening!

Anyhow, to cut a long story short I have decided to try my hand at showing - the main aim is to get feedback on how my chooks are compared to the standard. I have looked at the standard but because I am such a beginner at this I feel lost as to whether or not my chooks are good 'specimens' Given that I want to breed my Dorkings I thought getting an official 'opinion' would be a good starting point - no point starting with stock that have too many faults!

So far the following advice is what I have received and am following:
    Read the standard - check
Compare my chooks to the standard - quick glance, will check further this weekend although I think they are okay :o
Post entries and money - check (two Shows - Dubbo Poultry Club on 15 July and Macquarie Poultry Club of Wellington (feature breed is Dorkings) on 21 July)
Wash chooks 3 days to a week prior - will be having my first go at this on the weekend thinkerg.gif
Training boxes to get them used to it - half constructed hope to finish this weekend
Containers for feed and water for the show - check
Are there any other things I can do to make it as stress free for my chooks (and me) as possible?

Regards

Ok a couple of things you can do

1 - when they are in training walk past them as much as possible and get anyone else you can to do the same
2- take them out and handle them a couple of times a day so they get used to it
3 - play some talkback radio/music in the background and at a reasonable volume so they get used to different noises

4 - HAVE FUN at the show :-D

Thanks FowlMan :-D

Caught my Rooster and washed him for the first time yesterday - he loved it! I then dried him off with a towel, hair dryer and then in the cat cage in front of the heater before putting him back in his house - he kept going to sleep and almost sounded like he was purring a couple of times sidesplit.gif

I had to laugh this morning - when I let him out of his house, he came struttting up to me to show off his lovely feathers. Talk about hamming it up  He really is a sweetie :-D

Now to do the hen this afternoon after work!

Is it ok for the kids to handle them a few times a day would that make them more tame for the judges.
Is there such a problem as too tame for a show chicken?

Yes the kids handling them is real good idea for both the chicken and the kids. No such issue with an over tame show fowl the more relaxed the better
