Bushfires: Prepare Act Survive and Emergency Plans

It has been a very wet winter and there is a lot of fuel on the ground.

We have our neighbourhood first bushfire preparedness meeting being held next week, does anyone have any more advice in regards to keeping poultry and livestock safe during bushfires to share? It is great when people can support each other.

Yesterday was really hot here in Victoria and a day of Total Fire Ban, it really got me seriously thinking again about what and how would I do if another bushfire came...

Hello Petite Poulet,

We've had the Victorian Bushfire advice man at our place to assess bushfire risk and give site specific advice. Most people are saying they'll leave their properties rather than stay, but as he said, "What if you are forced to stay. What will you do then?". If I'm forced to stay, the four girls will be inside in a cage in the bathroom. If we are leaving, I have bought a large plastic cat cage ($42) for moving them from one end of the block to the other when I move the tractor, so they all get straight in knowing it takes them to a fresh spot.

So that's how I'd collect them up if we leave. To me, the temporary inconvenience to them of being in a small cage is better than leaving them. A friend in the bush with more chooks says she'll leave her chooks there if she goes and open the door on the run to give them a chance to get away from a fire.

Whatever we do, the advice man said to decide on a plan now and stick to it. The biggest mistake he said is to make a last minute decision when a fire is coming. It's likely to be a bad, unprepared and dangerous decision. So you raise these questions early enough to have some time to make plans we will stick to. [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

After Thursday's heat I am not looking forward to the forthcoming Summer at all [smilie=rlp_smilie_178.gif]

Don't be a hero and stay and defend, best to be prepared and leave early.

I have a large pet carrier and since there are only the two girls it makes it easier this summer to take them.

I live in Ipswich and tomorrow its forecast to be 43 deg so last thing tonight I cleared some scrub away from the coop and shed just incase
