Japanese quail will lay an egg a day, beginning when they are about 7 weeks old. They stop laying in winter just like chickens. Their eggs take 17 days to hatch.

Bobwhite quail will lay at around 23 weeks, and stop in the winter also. Eggs take 23 days to hatch.

Californian quail breed at 1 year old and only lay in the spring and summer. 23 days to hatch.

Soooo if your after a good meat and egg quail, hands down you can't beat the Japanese quail. They are by far the best and most economical option. With hens reaching 350 grams (known as Jumbos). We are currently working on a line that reaches 500 grams at 8 weeks old. If anyone would like to see pics let me know (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post them here).

We feed our breeding flocks a mixed diet, including greens, high protein feed and shell grit on demand. They also love bugs and boiled egg (we crush the whole egg, shell and all) and feed them that. If you feed egg though, remove any that hasn't been eaten as it spoils very quickly. Don't ever feed them wet mash- your asking for trouble.
