Peter,

how well do quail eggs travel and how long after they have travelled can they be placed in an incubator?

I was given some Jap Quail eggs mid December - the breeder had little idea of how to pack eggs for the OZ Post experience - half were broken and the rest did not hatch.

[Perhaps this bit should be made a sticky somewhere so all can read it] compliments of  soozorps  =
'Packing eggs for freighting/mailing'
All eggs must be packed properly so there is no movement within the egg carton - I recommend paper towels wrapped around each egg then place them singularly in the wells in the carton - ensuring enough paper towelling is used to be certain the eggs wont move within the well. Then tape the carton shut - wrap in alfoil - wrap a lightly damp wrung out cloth around the alfoil - this is to maintain minimum mositure levels during transportation. Then wrap all this in a plastic shopping bag - place the carton [you can actually fit 2 of them] in a BM size OZ Post carboard box - they seem to be sturdy enough - pack newspaper under/around/over the carton/s to ensure they dont move - tape box shut - then - - - NEVER mark them as FRAGILE or EGGS or THIS WAY UP or ANYTHING other than the address the parcel is going to and yr address on the back. Some Oz Post employees have a penchant for SHAKING such marked items to see if they can hear any chicks inside!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some have been known to actually use such items as foot balls - just to be totally nasty. You do not want to receive boxes marked fragile and/or eggs that have had distinct KICK marks on them right down to the boot imprint.Rendering the eggs usless for incubation.
