Was just wondering what age you can sex chickens from. I recently purchased some fertile eggs and I candled them tonight and have at least 4 that a re forming little ones. So I was just wondering after they have hatched how long before I know what they are.

Some breeds are easier than others , Unless you are doing it professionaly and are an expert you will need to let them mature at least till they start to feather up , to use the old comb and tail technique , A pullet will have a smaller comb in most breeds , if you post so piccies once they start to feather up I'm sure their are plenty of us who'll have a "wild Guess" for you  Once you get used to your own breed and line you may be one of the lucky ones that can spot the difference straight away , Practice makes perfect , I always tell people I will assist them in choosing but I never make promises as U always get the odd one that will look like a pullet right up until it starts crowing , Ian

Aracana are one of the most difficult breeds to determine, easiest is by comparison at 5 weeks by an experienced person, otherwise at 8 weeks. I am happy to have a look at 5 weeks old if you send me a short video will all chicks in it, not too close to their heads. The 5 sec vid. on a digital camera is fine. (send to johanna.gatehouse@bigpond.com )
If you want to see if you can tell on your own, listen to the sounds they make, female after 5 weeks old make a higher pitch sound for instance.

hope this helps.
