Firstly let me say how sorry I am for your loss Rita. It's a horrible thing to have happen.

However, I'm going to play devil's advocate.

Firstly, dogs by nature are hunters. You can't blame them for behaving naturally- or being badly trained- or being improperly restrained. That's their owner's fault-fair & square- even if he is a nice man! Owning a dog is a responsibility- to the dog and the rest of the community- not a right!

Secondly Callum I'm not sure that it is legal to shoot dogs trespassing on your property in many mainland states (no matter how right it may seem at the time!!)

Thirdly, we keep prey species, who are potentially constantly susceptible to attack- from dogs, foxes, dingoes, snakes or birds of prey.
Therefore, to some extent we bear the responsibility of protecting them from such predators. If that means building a dog-proof compound or fencing and using netting over runs, then so be it. Obviously this can be quite expensive, but at the end of the day you either do it as much as you can or live with the risk. Most of us compromise and do a bit of both.

Given the number of people posting about their losses from such predators, then it is a real issue, and has been one ever since man has kept poultry. It is something we all need to consider.

No one should have to go through this sort of trauma.

Parvo,,, you are also very right,, it is the responsibility of the stock owner to protect their stock as best they can, and i am sure most people do. i may be wrong here but i have been told that, any stock that comes on to your land is fair game,,, i had a foal (horse) attacked by some dogs about a year back, i did fire warning shots, no kill shots.... was told (afterward) i had the right to destroy the dogs that killed my foal on my property. We as people lucky enough to be around animals and live with them have a responsibility to look after them and the right to protect them , so its a bit of a catch ""22". Taking responsibility to protect some times means going further than any body wants to!!! but yes if my dogs are seen on another persons property i expect them to be shot... needless to say i spend a lot of time with my dogs teaching them not to leave the property.. It is the owner of any animal that should have responsibility for that animal.... the law says people can shoot the animal not the owner...... may not be fair, but if all owners where responsible, non of us who have had to do this would be put in that position......

Parvo, sorry but, from what i have learn t Callum is right here, in every state, any dog or cat on another persons property is considered fair game! The owners should also have to answer in my opinion.. perhaps not to a bullet though

I can see where you are comming from, and i think we can sought of do a bit of both,
ie shoot feral things like the foxes and wild dogs,
and make our pens more secure (rather than just chucking a few bits of wire together and killing anything that dares to sniff at it!).

Yes it is not the dogs fault (well, it is, but they dont know any better

) it is up to the owner to train or restain their animals. Maybe we should shoot the owner instead. For the same reason i feel that we cannot blame foxes for their murderous ways, as if WE had not indroduced them to Oz, the lives of zillions of fowl could have been saved.

I do believe that it is legal to shoot a dog that is killing your stock, even in the mainland states.

my pens go above and beyond security, cyclone fencing in concrete trenches, netting on top. the tractor though, dosnt have concrete trenches, for obvious reasons, but they tore the wire from its nails on the wood!

I dont own a gun and I am on 3 acres, so wouldnt dream of doing it. But a well aimed machete.....?

Guys- thanks for clearing up the legality issue. It seems that it is more about whether you are allowed to discharge a firearm in the area you live ( eg edge of suburbia) vs out in rural areas- rather than if it is legal to shoot stray animals on your property. I'll try to find out from legislation whether this is any different and post any info that's relevant.

Rita- it seems that you have gone to greater lengths than most I know to house your stock properly. I'm sorry that it wasn't enough.

Know of any travelling circuses to help you with your knife throwing? :lol:

yes you are not allowed to discharge a firearm within towns boundry but yes it is leagal to shoot a woundering dog cat pig and goat on your property but you you are supposed to leave it in the place you shot it as proof but this is a last straw action we all try to get on with our neighbours.
Just checked Qld gov dog rules and codes as regards dangerous dogs and it states that a dog that has coused fear to a person or any other animal can be declared DANGEROUS and as such HAS to be contained in an approved compound with a heap of stipulations which maybe an option it said to declare a dog dangerous you need to contact you local council if this is of any help
