Lavender Araucana Chicks

Thanks everyone. Very interesting Lazy. I'm going to have to kep the little so and so's now to see how they turn out. :roll:

So if I'm understanding you, you think the chicks could be black split with duck wing(e+) or ??(eb) with the lavender dilute gene.

They are definitely a yellow colour with silvery/lavender stripes. Well three of them. One is just yellow. I have to email the person I got the eggs off and see what colour chicks she gets. Still haven't done that yet. She only has lavenders.

Had a look at those two websites in my searching. :-D

They don't really talk about chick colour and one of them the chicks section was a broken link.

Most of the pictures were of the full silvery coloured chicks. Saw how many nice colours you could get though. I must be strong and not become a chicken hoarder.

Possibly the no-stripe one is white? There are a whole range of colours in Araucanas, just the Lav ones for some reason tend to lay the blue-est eggs and seem to be the most common.

Alternately as someone has suggested it might be a Lav on a gold background rather than the more common silver. Gold is recessive and sex linked, so could be carried by the rooster. If that is the case then this chick is most likely a female.

So technically should lavender araucana roosters have an even shade of lavender/grey/blue/granny's hair rise throughout their plumage? If a lavender araucana rooster has gold hackles would he be considered a true lavender and where would he have got the gold plumage from?

A Lavender rooster will be Lavender, if it has Straw colour in the hackles then there is Gold in it's makeup. It cannot be Gold colour because the Lavender gene also changes Red/Gold to a Straw colour, the striped chick's in the photo are likely to have some Straw in the hackle and maybe the shoulder as well, but how knows it is always a bit of a guess when you don't know what the parents are breed from.

I emailed the lady I got the eggs off. She is new to the breed as well. I've given her the link to this topic as she was interested in the genetics. So thanks for your knowledge Lazy. :-D

I'll take more photo's as they grow so we can all see what's happening.
