Thankfully the brown leghorn roosters Image look completely different to the hens, and both girls won prizes in the 'pullet' section, so I think I'm OK :)

As for keeping them apart, it's too late - they're in together.

I don't have a second coop for sick bay / quarantine yet, but I'm getting one (a second hand job that a work mate doesn't want) over the next couple of weeks, so it will be ready for the next additions. I figured since they have been penned at the show since Fri morning that I'd be able to see if they had runny bums (which they didn't over the two days I spent at the show). Oh well, newbie mistake - will cross my fingers the pecking stops soon and they can get on with each other.

I'll be keeping a close eye on them today, had to 'divert' the campine a couple of times, but there's three drinkers and two feeders as well as scratch and grass in the pen, so all the girls will have a chance to eat & drink.

I'll worm them all and re-dust for pests... I have avian disinfectant from the online vet store, so will give the house a good clean when it's warmer outside (in a couple of hours) as well. It's 1 degree here :(

$700  was it made of gold or something? What type of Rooster was he?

I'm glad they are pullets someone tried to sell me a rooster as a very pretty and rare pullet

Some people really are despicable! :x Glad you didn't fall for it PP.

I would definitely be keeping an eye on them. Not quarantining your newbies could be a recipie for disaster for the whole flock.

Make sure you have some antibiotics on hand just in case symptoms start to present. You don't want to wait to get them in the mail or wait to see if they manifest worse. You may end up losing the lot. :(

I bought a chook medicine chest online and have:
avitrol plus
oxymav B
Calcivet
Avitrol plus (liquid and tablets) and
Coccivet
All in a box in case I need it.

I hope I don't need anything except the wormers... will let you know how I go.

The expensive man was an Ian Tollner bred Indian Game Dark cock. The second one went for $600  Some Australorp pullets went for $300+, Gold laced Wyandotte pullet $360, Araucana lavender pullet - $200 and black leghorn hen $420   There were lots of VERY expensive, beautiful birds...

Oooo how cool a Chook medice chest!

Where did you get that? Oxymav B is good. I am going to give my chicks some today as little Digger has started sneezing a little bit & don't want him to make everyone sick so all are getting dosed. :)

I seem to have built up a medicine cabinet as well. So much in there now, but I didn't know you could buy all of it in one go. Things you learn from everyone on this site. Priceless.

I have heard that some of those game birds get big dollars but I didn't know they went for that much!

My hubby would KILL me if I paid that for a bird

Definitely keep us posted about how you're girls are getting on.

Cheers

May I ask where you purchases the chook medicine chest from? Our local vet and stookfeed aren't really helpful.

Thanks.

I saw a ‘medicine kit’ advertised on an overseas site – I think it was a UK one, (while I was looking up automatic coop doors and poultry supplies) but the kit was waaaay expensive, so I decided to make my own.
Because I got everything online, it came in a box through the post, so it is all together in a large shoebox, stashed in the ‘medicine’ cupboard above the fridge.
My online supplies – antibiotics, vitamins and calcium, and the avian disinfectant came from this mob: http://ovedshorseandpetstore.com.au/Bird-Supplies the other bits & pieces have been gathered as a result of reading posts on APF and this one, that I did bookmark: http://hencam.com/henblog/2011/08/3698/. This lady has it all in a plastic storage box... but my 'shed' isn't near the pen, so a box is fine for me.

There's quite a few online vet stores, I went searching for cheap Oxymav B and found the best discounts the same weekend I got my first chooks - I freaked out the first time I saw soft poo until my friend that used to have chooks told me they were fine [smilie=a_doh.gif]. Anyway, I now have 80 bucks worth of medicine stuff on hand if I need it. My hubby has his car project, I have chooks and my hobby is cooler!! [smilie=a_rolling.gif]

Thanks for the information, definitely agree about the chooks, men and their cars

See if you can borrow Chook Wisdom, More Chook Wisdom, Zen and The Art of Raising Chickens, and Chicken Coops for the Soul A Hen Keeper's Story from your library, well worth the read.

The campine was mean and pecked pale legs until her comb bled... Then I had to lock the campine out and catch the two brownies to put them in the house tonight... If she's still being evil tomorrow should I put her in a box by herself, or is it better to let them fight it out?

I take it the Campine is older than the Leghorn girls?

The pecking is part of a natural order, so because you have thown the newbies in without going through a gradual introduction process, the pecking will be more vicious.

Now, I'm not saying this to make you feel bad.....If you introduced them via a gradual process, say via a daily free ranging over a week or so, where the girls would get to know who is the boss chookie, then when you eventually get to the point of locking them together they have a better idea of who is boss & where they all belong on the roosts etc.., But, because this did not happen, the boss (the Campine in this case) sees them as an intruder and not as a gradual member of the group. So she will be vicious because she is 1) defending her territory & 2) making known who is boss. Which is not always pretty to witness.

When you do the free ranging introduction they will still get picked on but you get to determine the length of time they get to spend with each other every day. Normally it's only for a short period on the first day, then over the next week or so, you extend the time to longer & longer so eventually everyone is comfortable & there is no big, immediate threat to have to defend everything. Which is all your Campine is doing.

The Leghorns comb will heal. I put Savlon on my girls busted up combs after my Plymouth Rock gave my girls a few good strikes that made them bleed. And she really opened them up with her beak. Like, I'm talking about a two inch gash, straight down the length if the combs of my Isa's.

It's not pretty, but they will sort it out.
