Hi Everyone:

I am with the Regal Swan Foundation, Inc., (http://www.theregalswan.com) in Orlando, Florida. We are a non-profit organization with the purpose of providing humane treatment and veterinary medical care for swans worldwide. We act as Ask The Swan Specialist at the Vancouver website (http://www.stanley-park-swans.com).

I am posting two requests in Australia for purpose of research and bloodline replenishment.

First, we are looking for anyone who might have the leucistic (light color silver mutation) of any black swans and would like to contact you regarding your lineage and the possibility of trading or buying a couple of the silver swans. We call them Mearl Swans here in Florida and there are several sites with images if you would like to see this unique coloration.

Finally, we have been researching swans (mostly white colored species, Mute, Trumpeter, Coscorobas, Whoopers, etc.) turning pink in color. We have been working with Her Majesty's Swan Warden, Dr. Christopher Perrins,, Oxford, England, Wendy Hermon, Swan Lifeline, Eton, England and David Wheeler, Abbotsbury Swannery, Abbotsbury,Dorcet England. We have identified the culprit as bacterial in nature and are currently working on identifying the species. Does anyone have any photos in your area that you would like to share of the swans turning pink. We are interested in seeing if the bacteria is in your area of the world. We are now seeing the pink coloration in Ibis, Egret, Heron, White Pelican as well as swans. If you have any information on the Silver Swan or the pink coloration, please contact me through this site or (Bolin.S@att.net). Thank you all of helping us in this research project. Sheila Bolin, The Regal Swan

We cannot export swans/eggs ect... to you as the laws here prohibit that sorry.

We would all love to see some pictures posted of the mutations you are all working on or have

Hi Weston:

Thank you for your comments. I am sending you two photos, one of the Mearl or Silver Swan which we are looking for a new bloodline and the Pink Feather Syndrome that causes the deterioration of feathers in a swan as well as causes the swan to turn pink in color.

Also, we are looking for the Mearl Swan bloodline for someone else. Does your poultry/waterfowl laws allow you to ship to a licensed breeder in Canada? Thanks. Sheila The Regal Swan

Hi Danny:

Yes, this color variation of the Black Swan is stunning.

More than likely someone who breeds black swans does have this mutation in the gene pool. The swan parents are usually normal looking Black Swans meaning their phenotype (appearance) is that of the Black Swan but the parents carry a recessive gene (genotype) which produces this leucistic color mutation. However, there is no rhyme or reason as to when the coloration eventually appears after many breedings.

We have been in contact with a breeder who has two bloodlines for this mutation, but is looking to add a third so that the coloration can continue once the present parents get older as well as form a stronger gene pool. Thanks for providing us the information. Do you know if swan breeders in New Zealand are under the same legal constraints for exporting swans as in Australia? We ask, because New Zealand is looking to cull many of the Black Swans and we would love to find a leucistic color producing pair before they may be culled. Thanks. Sheila Bolin, The Regal Swan Foundation

There is no documentation of any mutations here and I doubt there is. We have the black and mute and that is it I believe.

The silver is nice

Hi Stuart

Thanks for the info. I' m glad you were able to see this beautiful coloration. Even though it is a color variant, the Silver or Mearl Swan has the aggressive temperment of it's parents and is much larger than the Black Swan color/species. Sheila Bolin The Regal Swan Foundation
