Answer: When one of your rare-breed hens suddenly appears with 4 newborn chicks in tow and you hadn't noticed that she was missing for three weeks!

On New Year's Eve I went out to feed the chooks some bread and milk and was shocked to see 4 tiny de Watermael babies running around with the flock. My little quail hen, Amelia, had nested in some old tyres near one of our gardens and successfully hatched 4 out of 6 eggs.

I quickly netted the babies and Mum and put them safely into a rabbit hutch to grow up a bit so the dogs and kookaburras and butcher birds, etc, etc, etc don't snack on them - they are so small.

Amazingly, as Amelia has been running with the mixed flock, the chicks seem to be purebred. They are tiny, have beards & muffs and clean legs so there doesn't seem to be any pekin input.

Unfortunately, due to the respiratory disease problems I've had here, these chicks will have already been exposed to the wild virus before I have had a chance to vaccinate them. Hopefully they'll fight it off and gain some natural immunity.

Deb :-D

LOL at Amelia....sneaky little beggar.

I am continually finding hidden nests here...the Polish are shockers sometimes but my laying girls are worse.

Hopefully some little Belgian will come out with a troop of chicks one day....yet to happen though.

Ohhh Deb that has made me really smile and chuckle

Congrats on the babies

Deb,

It is all your fault I swear....or at least your hen's fault.

One of mine must have been reading over my should as yesterday I looked out the back to find a Belgian runnning around. Me thinks she has escaped as I just changed the doors on 3 pens and rearranged birds. I thus check out the Belgian pen and no one is missing AND now so is this particular hen

Hmmm so I work out I have a wayward broody

She appears at the backdoor again this morning,so I sit and watch her (tapping foot waiting...waiting...waiting). Finally she shows me where her nest is under the corner of my shed (not bad with only a 4-5inch clearance and a high traffic area for the yard and shed.

Well said nest has what looks to be about 20 eggs in it

Will keep everyone posted as to the outcome, but I do think it is your hen's fault Deb for the start of this.

Lucky you!!!! What sort of Belgian girl is she? Maybe they have their own APF that they chat on when we are asleep - Australian People Forum, where they work out how to get around their humans!

My tricky little mum is going well with her 4 babies, although one has a very crooked beak so I probably can't keep that poor little thing. It is eating and drinking okay so I'll leave it be for now.

Deb :-D

She is a little black d'Uccle Deb. It is actually the 3rd time this hen has been broody this season, but I have had her the other times and controled what she was sitting on.

This lot look Belgian sized eggs but would mean they were all laying under there at some point.

I hadn't even missed her....but before xmas I was so busy I was just opening pen doors and letting them out and than locking them in after dark. Only god knows what will hatch thats for sure BUT I know it won't be d'Watermaels as they are never allowed out.

Guess it will teach me for laughing at Amelia

Yes she will be

Just wish I knew when she sat is all. She got through the hot days last week so am guessing she has only been down a week.

Time will tell....nest is pretty tight and she is a good size and being under the shed would no doubt get pretty warm so who knows what she might do.

They are in too tight a spot to do a proper count but she is definately sitting on between 15 and 20.

I had one of my pet chickens go broody somewhere not long before we wnt on a holiday, 2 weeks later when i returned she came out for a feed in the afternoon, so i followed her back to where her nest was and she nested under the flat right at the very far leaft conner behind a piece of metal so you could barely see her. she had 8 eggs, 7 fertile and 1 infertile, 7 of the chicks hatched on the 8th which was the exact same day she hatched under a broody peahen!
