We too were rezoned and hard to cut down our number to 4 but we have the house on the market and are moving to larger acreage so we can get back our fowls and life style

I thin it will happen more in the future with high density living on the rise

That's why councils set up rules and regulations about the number of chooks we can ,or, can not keep, some of us might not like this. The councils are afraid of the chook's taking over the planet!!! [smilie=new_silly.gif]

I think the council are just scared the chickens will take their jobs! And be better at it!!!

Chooks are far more intelligent than some people, especially those councilors who rezone rural country areas and make the urban.

It's just GREED and MONEY, subdividing land and reducing the numbers of chooks and having annual permits in what were once rural or semi rural areas to keep more than 4 chooks!!!

Did anyone watch the Victorian news last night about the urbanisation of rural Victoria?

As previously mentioned, we have been rezoned from semi rural to urban, from being allowed 20 poultry, we are now reduced to a measly 4, and no farm animals without a permit. Sadly, this urbanisation has led to land sub division, acreages are now 1/4 acre blocks with very large houses or even smaller blocks with crammed town houses; we have an infra structure that can not support it's population growth.

We used to wake up to the sounds of roosters crowing and cows mooing in the distance, now we wake up to the sounds of traffic. The views of the hills have gone, only to be replaced by new housing estates.

We knew our neighbours and we all helped each other in times of need, always had time to stop and have a yarn, or pop in for a cuppa, now they are all strangers who pass us by...

If everyone had chickens, there would be no need to buy eggs. If everyone had cows, there would be no need to buy milk & beef. If everyone had a pig, there would be no need to buy bacon. If everyone grew their own crops, there would be no need to buy vegetables. Everyone would be self sufficient. The government would have no money to spend!

Therefore, it is more productive for the government to classify our land as Residential, so we have to buy everything. And of couse more people = more rates = more money for the government to spend on ... well, in my opinion... not what it needs to be spent on - Kevin's travel expenses for one

It is indeed a sad reflection of the direction we have taken as a society in the last few years.
There was a time every neighbour knew each other, supported and looked out for each other.
They all had a few chooks, a veg garden and a few fruit trees.
Now the land is covered in concrete and mansions that for the most part are ugly and far larger than required for a familys needs.
If every one of your neighbours had the few chooks vegies and fruit trees then life would be healthier and more realistic.
BUT it would only take one to complain and the council would take thier part and impose sanctions on all the rest and that is just what has happened.
It is no longer the will of the majority but the petty whims of one that take precedence.
We can't have thier privacy invaded or peace interupted by a crowing rooster but it is quite acceptable to have thier will and personal wants/needs imposed on the vast majority.
Just like so many other things the minority rules and they get thier way or they scream human rights violations, what about the rights of the majority, the rest of us.

...Once upon a time, in a land long gone, where we felt safe and kept our doors unlocked, and neighbours would just come in; we would put the kettle on, sit and talk for hours, about anything or nothing... They would bring their knitting ,or, quilting and sit by the fire in winter. We always had time, or, made the time...The blokes would always offer and lend a hand, and would share a cold beer on a hot summer's day...

There were always fresh eggs, produce, jams, preserves, and pickles and with the shops being a fair distance, we would all happily exchange each other’s goods, or just be happy to give away what we didn't need. Everyone shared our bounties in good times and bad.

Our children were fortunate to grow up in this environment; they are still not yet corrupted by the materialistic ego centric consumerism that has become society, and we are very proud of them. They have managed a small chook revival amongst the faithful, much to the disdain of the new neighbours and their aversion to poultry and farm animals. Heaven forbid, if we decide tether a goat...

This is all so true for my area in which we all once new each other and shared our produce and a good chat but as some sold to the town people and they were not so friendly now everyone keeps to themselves and gone are most of the small farms replace with smaller hobby blocks and motor bikes its a refection on what we have become sadly
