Read this brought back memories of my last property and the big issue with 2 dog close by and their owners that could not careless what the dog did and to who. We lost over 8 good quality hens and 1 rooster to these dogs and the council would do little to stop them in the end we moved away from the area not just because of the dog but also because of their scum owners and drugs they were dealing

if the dog comes on your property again = you can seize it as a not controlled dog and take it to the pound - it is illegal to let your dog run loose outside of its own property and there are fines = yes = this will prompt the owner to retaliate but you can adivse this 'owner' that each time the dog goes on your property you will sieze it and take it to the pound = eventually the owner will 'click'

colour/infra red camera security sytems help in prosecutions as well - very expensive but the footage is admissable in court

Unfortunately the trick is catching the damn dog so it can be impounded. No easy feat.

The owner is a primitive, debased, low life and I can honestly say I would fear for the welling and safety our chooks

The owner just stood there and watched and made NO attempt to call HIS dog off the chooks...

My older teenage children would dearly love a German Shepherd or Maremma to guard their chooks, but they are well aware about the life time commitment and responsibility owning a dog brings. With them so close to leaving the nest, they have had thought very deeply about dog ownership and what it means so they have decided NO dog for them at this point and time in their lives...

OMG I cannot believe that anyone would just stand there and watch their animal do that!! Oh the whole neighbourhood would have heard me screaming them down! Absolutely disgusting behaviour, and since I am new to chooks and never owned a dog I am horrified and shocked at councils responses to situations like this.

I would be keeping a rather fat juicy steak in the fridge, along with a suitably sized cage kept in the yard near the coop. If that dog (or any others, for that matter) do something like that again, grab the steak, get the dogs interest and throw it into the cage.

^ well there are dog trap cages - but in suburbia I doubt you could use them (legally)
FYI = in the rural areas - you can legally shoot a dog on your property - they are classed as 'wild' if they are running loose
but the councils recommend the - 'do not tell clause be enforced' = shoot it bury the body and then no dog ever entered your property

good fencing to keep this dog and its ferrel owner out are the best alternative here (as murder is also illegal)

In regards to fencing, we had a 95kg Rottweiler ex junk yard guard dog living next door and NEVER had a problem. The owners put up an electric fence on that side of the property, there is chook wire around all boundary fences, and the only weak point is a small gap under the front gate.

The dog has been through another's neighbour's property and dug under her fence to get on to ours. The owner used the front gate which is kept closed as too many people with small dogs walk them off their leads that wander on to the property. Never have a problem with larger breeds their owners seem more responsible.

Getting the camo gear out and going on an early morning recon mission to find out exactly where they live then phone the council.

In regards to dog traps, they are allowed to be used in most areas and the councils actually rent them out. For my council, they will even pick up the cage with dog if you catch anything, as well as any cats we catch. This has helped me get rid of 5 stray dogs and 10 feral cats on our property killing our animals. Because the dog trap is humane and safe to use, most councils recommend it. This may help for any future problems.

good to know your council has this service - so asking would be a good idea - but then this ferel owner would only get the dog back and then the war would be on

Hens and Hobbits = I used to own Rotties that were total lounge lizards :-D

and they are usually well trained/well behaved (the owners of all the larger breeds tend to be responsible dog owners - most small breed owners are too - just the odd few that ruin it!) = it is often said that it is the owner that makes for a badly behaved dog = back to this ferel owner!

pity you dont live in the bush where yr nearest neighbour live a couple of kilometres away!
