This is fantastic I think it is quite sad how conservative the poultry fraternity is in australia, there are plenty of breeds that have been developed in australia in other types of livestock but very few in poultry with experimenting and developing of new uniqely australian breeds seeming to be discouraged with a " only conserve established breeds" mentality, there are plenty of new poultry breeds being developed overseas Welsh blacks for example, I tip my hat to you, if you are anywhere near sydney and want people to take up your breed when they are established please keep me in mind

Very lucky night last night. fox came at 4.30 am. Wife woke me to the sound of screaching so zi left half naked to check the pen next to house. 7 foot wire negotiated by fox. This pen houses the Hugeunots and juveile buttercups. Lost one breeding gold hamburg hen with willow legs and two chicks. thought worse during night, but found all other missing juveniles at daylight. No other losses. The fox had no trouble escaping with three items over the 7 foot fence. So be warned.

3rd December, my son left the mature adult buttercups out and all of them were beheaded as I arrived at my farm at 1am. The last hen still jumping from nerves. This is a bad year for foxes. I have to get the pics up to document their existence in case they are lost.

One pullet chick is virtually the colour of brown leghorn for females, tho the parents are my avatar rooster x gold spangled hamburg hen. It has striking willow legs.

the cockeral has slate legs but the paattern of gold pencilled hamburg as he is cross between the avatar rooster and gold pencilled hamburg. Spangle x mottle in the avatar rooster is causing the buttercup pattern to display in offspring.

I recently moved to Bayles and could not believe the number of foxes we saw in the first week it was 5 of the week so a rethink of the coop was needed as we never new they were that bad. I did not know they are such good climbers so we ended up with a complete sealed coop with very heavy mesh so they cannot get in and to this day they have tried and failed thank goodness. I am sorry you have lost some of yours I hope you can reduce the foxes with some help from your council perhaps

we discussed foxes at the birthday party didnt we - they are in such numbers that we really need the licenced hunters to do the rounds again!
get going with the phone camera and post here

ALLBLACKS = our Council (Frank's and mine) is next best thing to useless in all matters 'fox'
and the traps they give you usually dont work - most being damaged and never repaired/replaced

best method of erradication = .22 but that means having to be at the property 24/7 for about 3 months and wearing a lot of smelly cammo gear
not an option

No chance our council will do anything. I've been thinking for some time to renew my shooters licence . Always held back cos Kallista is a built up area but not the farm. Anyway, I think we all got probs in this regard with foxes.

One note, this fox bugging me isn't so much a climber but he gets up some pace before running up the fire over the top. 3/4 of the compound now has large square holed wire around the top three feet so there is no added foothold to this running up technique. Just have to finish changing it asap. Can't put a roof on this area as too many Rhododendron trees provide the area with shade. Outside this compound I have concrete F19 on the ground so the bugga can't dig in. So nearly got the whole place covered.

Wondering what would happen if you put a smaller, say 1m high, fence around the main enclosure at about 1m off. That would break up his momentum as he tried to run because he would have to negotiate the first fence before tackling the main one. Cost or space might be prohibitive, I don't know, just a thought.

They look absolutely fabulous!

Hope that you can invest in a digital camera, as previous mentioned that are now rather inexpensive and you can get a good brand with 14 mega pixels for under $80 at Officeworks. I am saving up for a SLR.

I think if Mr. Fox is hungry NOTHING will stop or deter him. Where there is a will there is a way...Mr. Fox took off with the neighbour's girls, her pen/run/coop was like Willie Wonker's Chocolate Factory, nothing could go in our out and Mr. Fox managed to find a way in, hypnotise the girls and get out in a very short period of time...

Next question do you own a Maremma, they are very good fox deterrents?
