Maybe you can change the nesting marterial to wood shavings? That's what I have in my girls boxes. They have always laid their eggs on that.

Peaches would catch a chill going from the cold out side to the warm inside laundry then back outside in the cold in the morning.

It takes half the day for the fog to lift and it is really damp, no point in moving a pefectly healthy bird in and out for one night

Please give them a cuddle or two or three, from me, their mum and their aunt.

Hello PP

Nope, the message is not getting through to Peaches. She laid this mornings egg just under the roost on the poop again. I have changed the nest box lining to wood shavings only, we will see if that makes a difference.

Could she still be a little sleepy and her egg just drops from her while she is still roosting?

The boys are good little men. Crowing at a respectable time and seem to be eating well and they love their roost. They have had plenty of cuddles and chats too.

I don't imagine you could be too sleepy with something like that dropping out your behind. :shock:

Can you fence off or restrict her access under the roost for a while to see if that dissuades her?

Indeed, maybe she is still asleep when she lays her egg, a chook's average ovulation is 22-24 hours.

Hmmm, maybe the boys need to wake her up earlier

The boys are good listeners, they are really well behaved and will go home to their coop when you open the door and tell them "home", Muffy is usually the first to go in then he will call Wheezy. Wheezy is a good brother he finds tasty morsels and feeds Muffy, I am sure that they will take good care of your girls.

I think you are correct. I doubt that a chicken would be unaware of an egg falling from her derrière, but she seems to be laying before sun rise (about 5am). Should I remove the roost for a couple of days? If I remove the roost will the other girls be happy without roosting for a couple of days too?

If you remove the roost so are not roosting for the night then, possibly she will still be laying in her night deposits in whatever cosy corner she is sleep in.

You somehow need to reprogram her biological clock, extend their daylight/or day somehow, difficult in this weather, or lock Peaches in the nesting box overnight, she should be warm in there. Though once again you would have to clean the poop out from the nesting box in the dark.

I still say you need to interrupt her cycle.

Are you willing to get up before she has laid an egg, take her out of her home & rehouse her for a couple of hours (maybe inside with you) and then put her back so she can then lay her egg.

Worth a try!
