Errrrrrrrrr, where do i start.... (maybe a hello since i havent posted anything in forever!) so hi !!!

Anyways... all 5 of my girls are going good.... 5 eggs a day every day (unless it is hot day or they are out of sorts then less eggs) anyways.......
I'd just given my hens some scraps and went to feed the cockatiels... from the corner of my eye i see 2 chickens fighting... so i turned to watch.... well they weren't fighting.... they were MATING !!! Matilda the big hen was on the back of another hen with the other hens neck fathers in her beak and doing everything a rooster would be doing to a chicken in that scenario ! after they both had a big ruffle and shake and were all good again.....

well darn me but i have never seen this before... Matilda the chicken squats for me when i go to pat her and does a ruffle... we get 5 eggs usually for 5 chickens a day so i assume they are all females still and all still laying.... never heard any crowing!

What Matilda did to that other chicken was EXACTLY how a rooster would mate.... i have seen many chickens and ducks mate. i just haven't owned a rooster myself.

Is this normal female hen behaviour ??? Matilda is NOT the dominant chicken. but she likes to throw her body around now and again... specially over food.

all the chickens are isa browns... Matilda is a lot lighter in colour than the others. she is on the far left of this photo.

G'day BFLF,

I'm glad that you have posted this question as I was afraid to do so myself. Here is a link to my previous thread about menopause and chooks, since then the older girl mentioned is mounting the younger one as a rooster would, no idea why.

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=23967

All your girls are the same age, so I am curious what causes this behaviour as my girls previously had a rooster in their lives.

lol.... i thought i was going out of my mind... i almost convinced myself she is a rooster... ALMOST !

they are all the same age, your right... there is never going to be a rooster in my pen so if she wants to become a butch lesbian chicken then so be it.... haha

I just had a thought..... maybe it is because i haven't given them enough "attention" lately... i use to always let the out every day and sit with them for at least an hour before i went inside and left them to free range... well now they are lucky to come out twice a week to free range. instead i pick them huge mounds of grass every day and lawn clippings etc... i just don't have the time and am not there to always watch them and they go walk about around the neighbour hood given the chance. so they cant come out that much anymore... so got me thinking when i use to sit with them they would always come right up to me and i would always pat them and they would always squat and get all ruffled and loved it... but now i don't so much and they don't get to ruffle and feel loved by me whom they seen a top rooster...lol.

So i guess Matilda the chicken is taking my place..... sidesplit.gif and the alpha chook well she is still alpha chook and will peck anyone who looks the wrong way... god forbid i ruffle someones feathers because alpha chook will be there in a heartbeat to smack down on their feather bodies. i'm surprised she didn't stop Matilda doing what she did...but i wasn't close enough to see which chicken Matilda mounted to know which one it was.

uh, the joys of chook keeping... when you think you have done so much research and reading that you can write your own book about chook keeping, something new always arrises !

I remember when you first got your girls, you've done a great job raising them!

My older girl is very cranky and hormonal sort of like a menopausal female, the younger one very submissive and lets her have her way with her, she is missing a few back feathers. You may have a point about the attention, mine just don't have their rooster any more.

Without a rooster one hen will take over that role in a flock – she isn’t always the dominant hen either and she may even do a hen version of a crow = hysterically funny to listen to

This behaviour is seen randomly in all hen flocks and is quickly sorted by bringing in a rooster but not everyone can have a rooster.

No idea how to stop it maybe someone else has an idea

crazy..... i just worked out they are only a few days shy of being 1 year old...

I have all the photos and memories of the sick little chicks i started with... over the year they sure have changed...
big difference from 5 little sick chicks to 5 big fat healthy hens.

here's a re cap from the hard beginning and now almost a week ago.

I guess if she doesn't stop it wont matter too much.... no one seamed to be getting hurt... if she did it once she probably has done it many times before but i was never there to see it.
I just have never heard or see or read or even knew they did this... I was curious to see how common it really was. and what was the reason....

I know someone always likes to scream during the day... sounds just like the laying egg song they do but louder and longer it happens randomly during the day from one of them...not sure which or if it is all of them.... can get noisy out there !!!
