National leg ring system for all exhibitors

Emma, as I posted above to soozorps The leg bands can be cut off BUT this is not about security of fowls this is about Show Fowl breeding and show records for breeders and clubs. This mean that a breed can sell his or her "club rung" fowl and the buyers have a means of tracing the breeder and its breeding records and even buy another fowl related ect...... The cost of the rings are 20c just 20c so 5 for $1 or 10 for $2 ect.. its cheap and even the hobby breeders can simply add the cost to the fowl they are selling so instead of $10.00 they could ask $10.20 but the reality is they will get much more $$$$ being club rung as they do with pigeons, budgerigars, finches, canary's, parrots ect... it will prove VERY affective as it has with ALL other show birds. It cannot be voluntary if its national like pigeons, budgerigars or canary's ect... and I think if you want to show fowl then they should be club rung as it is with ALL others

I think many are confused with what leg rings are all about and not in any way associated with stoping theft as they cannot.

Oh, I'm not confused about how leg rings work. My concern with the leg ring system, isif they are easily removed, what's to stop people from swapping them around on fowls. Perhaps a type of leg ring that once in place, can only be removed in such a manner that would prevent it from being re-used on another fowl.

Emma, you can never stop someone that wants to find away around these things BUT 99% of people are honest and I doubt many would ever do that. I don't really see the issue anyway as what would be gained? the ring number of a champion fowl is not published, the public would not know the champion leghorn was ring 5586 so taking a ring from a champion fowl and placing it on a pet quality won't help sell the fowl as only the breeder knows. Also remember the ring can only be on 1 fowl at 1 time sooner or later that fowl will go.

Also if you look at it practically and I will use the budgie as an example do you think a new breeder would pay $500 for a club rung "bush budgie" as opposed to a club rung "english budgie" now there a visual component to ALL this and a little common sense.

If breeders want to move with the times, they should really look at the merits of the ringing system and if are not convinced to rings all your fowl the just try a few this year and see the benefits for yourself.

Once the Lifelong rings are placed on the chick they cannot be removed and placed on another bird.The only way to remove them as they get older is to cut them off with a pair of pliers.

The growth of a chick is rapid. I placed the rings on my modern bantams. A bird that I rung 7 days later as a Test I went to see if I could fit another ring.The ring would not go over the ball of the foot. The existing ring would not slide off over the ball of the foot.The rings on our 6 - 7 month old birds we can slide them up and down the leg with ease but cannot get them off.
Once they are on they cannot be reused. You cannot place a ring on a adult bird.

When ringing you slide the ring on your chicks if they fall off check a few days later until they dont.

With our early bred chicks we rung at 6 weeks Later bred it was 8 weeks. We had a size for our pullets and a size for our cockerels at 10 weeks we placed the larger size on some late bred pullets to trial .

Even if they could get them off there is no real benefit as placing a leg ring on a bad fowl does not make it a good fowl

This sounds like a good idea.

I don't mean to come off all negative about the idea. I have been a victim of fraud and theft in the past, so I'm quite sceptical. But an easy to follow system would be great, and I think a lot of people could benefit from it, as well as specific rare breeds or colours. A good identification system could do a lot for the genetics and breeding in some rarer breeds of fowl.

Hi Emma I certainly did not take your comments as negative purely as valid constructive questions which if I was not involed I would have probably been asking the same.Its good to be able to provide feedback and its fantastic that this forum exists so people can discuss this.I have attached a photo of the rings.
