CRD, Treat or Cull

several things can cause bubly eyes, stress, dust, wood shavings-(some are treated in borax)
Why the fast reach for antibiotics?
All you do with CRD is treat the symptoms. The underlying disease or mycoplasma is still there to appear next time the bird is stressed.

there is only 1 way to get rid of it, its passed to the egg as well
Cull, Cull, Cull

by feeding poultry antibiotics you are increasing resistance to them.
In another 10 years, common staph & strep will be fatal again due to the unwise use of anti biotics

broiler producers put it in feed as it improves growth rates. they all say hormone free, none mention antibiotics

The chickens will poop out the antibiotic,
bacteria contact them in the manure
Some die, some survive
the survivors are resistant & pass the resistance on
Its just evolution.
Unfortunately resistance evolves faster than new drugs are developed
Yuo increase the speed of resitance evolution by treating untreatable disease
CULL!!!

Sorry but breed resistance does NOT apply across the board, especially when it comes to Rare breeds were culling is not a viable option. Breed resistance is only ONE option practiced by the minority but not the answer to respiratory diseases.

Sorry PA, I think you missed the point of my post. resistance does apply across the board.I was talking of resistance to the antibiotic by the baddies, not the chook to the disease
Chooks & birds get disease & they do die
people die to, from similar types of problems
The continual grab for antibiotic that only treat the symptoms cant be good for any one or any chook/bird. Or person whom I value higher
CRD is passed through the egg
what does one do with a bird with CRD?
Breed from it?
And so perpepuate the disease, as we have just allowed it passes to the egg and chick
Sell it?
and so spread it to other flocks?
Knowingly selling a carrier that does not display symptems is as bad as selling an obviuosly sick bird to a beginner.
Its just harder to detect
Cant show it either
It may hurt and be a costly exercise, but what do you do with a suspect bird other than cull it?

These days only the totally isolated who don't show, buy, sell, or outsource in any way can be reasonably (?) sure they are free of viral disease. It seems that most of us have birds in our flocks that are carrying something nasty, even if not displaying symptoms. It seems a bit extreme to cull everything. Fostering of purebreeds would grind to almost a complete halt if we did that. I cull most - but treat a select few for particular reasons. In an ideal world, culling would seem like the best option - but we've got what we've got.

CULL!!!

Spot on Eggsalive, you simply cannot cull across the board, and it is not the only option for CRD you can treat the birds and put the disease into remission with in many cases not show symptoms again or passing in on. Yes they will be carriers but that does not mean they will pass the disease to other birds but it is possible of course. We believe ALL birds should be given the best care possible and that means treating them if needed and not swinging an axe, especially rare breeds without exception.

I still havnt changed my stance, and never will
Got caught out by a well known breeder in qld once
lemon juice in the water will remove the gurgly chest for several hrs.
By the time it had worn off, I was well away from the sellers home as was on a road trip at the time.
Wasted money on my behalf.
but better dead than a known carrier in your flock
however, tylan is recommended and also dynamutalin(? spelling)
Interesting to see however how many are prepared to sell/breed from birds that carry
Yes true, you cannot know all the birds status, however culling on presentation of symptoms does work well

Fair enough blackdave. If you can always do it, it must work extremely well.

I have used the Tylan once, kindly given to me by the seller of bird that was ill. It worked very well. I'm not sure what the bird had, but it was gurgly so sounds similar. It was given in the form of injections into the breast muscle. Fortunately I had quarantined the new bird on my property and was able to keep the illness out of my flock.

I love all my pets from the dogs to our budgie, Tom, if they get sick we take them to the vet any of them we would not even think of killing them because they sneeze, I think that is very sad. Would you kill your dog or cat if they get sick? You sound like a big commercial poultry farm that treats them as a disposable commodity.

All animals have the right to be treated well, as do humans
An " axe" is a management tool.
I have a few
but only 1 for culling
I dont need a collection for that
If you do it right the whole flock benifits
Its less suffering than letting sick birds breed, passing on disease, endangering future generations with excessive use of antibiotics for incurable disease
When small livestock keepers have endangered all animals, including humans,
by reaching for drugs instead of common sense,
and TB, staph & strep become major killers again,killing 20 million a year as they did in the 1800's
It will be to late
Has anyone seen the results of "flesh eating Bacteria" as its called in the papers?
Or seen what happens to someone as they die from Multiple Resistant Tuberculosis
Or watched the devestating decline of someone with HIV/Aids, whom has no access to antiviral drugs??
Last year, I had 3 workers die of Aids,
2 die and 7 very nearly with MR TB, seen 2 cases of "flesh eating staph"
Why??
people in the so called 1st world encourage the irresponsible overuse of antibiotics .
The resistant bugs, then can run rampant in areas were lower socio economic groups live with no medical care.
The so called 3rd world
Thousands die every year, within 100 km of where I am sitting right now, from common things that you dont think of there
I would gladly kill every chook in my flock, and all yours as well, no guilt, not a blink
If it reduced or prevented the spread of resistant bugs for 2 years only
hell, 6 months
You sit and worry weather fluffy or Fred has a cold or CRD & will Roos survive another year to breed if you give him drugs

I watched Ohms & Bilson die, Amos and 2 of his children,
Kozie died as theres no anti virals avail
Dari, a 6 year old lost all her fingers & toes and 1 arm to staph
Rights of your chooks?
