CRD, Treat or Cull

I have watched this conversation develop and just thought I would put my thoughts out there. When I first started with poultry my emotions were right out there with Joanne. I did everything to save a bird. So sad because as I went on I saw the agonising death some had and I was devastated to loose a bird. I tried everything. Vet ,antibiotics you name it I tried it at an enormous cost to myself. After a few years I started to realise the situation and just saw I was the one being cruel to the bird. Very rarely did one make it.You think you are doing the right thing at the time. As I have gotten more birds I now look at them in a different way. If they are deformed even bent toes,the chop. they break a bone the chop. They get sick the chop,they don't gain weight,the chop (form of mareks). They don't look right the chop. I now don't use antibiotics unless under extreme reasoning and then I agonise over that. Talk to hubby. See what he thinks. I have some of the best birds health wise and size wise. I just will not risk my other birds in anyway. I can see what blackdave is saying and yes I now agree with what he is saying. I still have names for chooks and favourite's but,it's one rule for all now. It is not heartless in anyway. It is kinder to the chook in the long run. I now look back and think with some chooks it was animal cruelty. I am embarresed about that, but will also freely admit it now. I thought it was the right thing at the time.It was through ignorance and I was nieve.

Wow, I wouldn't give a bird the CHOP if it had croocked toes :shock:

I would just fix the problem by putting a brace on for a couple of days until it gets better.

If you want to breed good birds and it is a deformity then a brace wont help as it will carry a bad gene.The chop is the only thing.If a pet only (different)

usually it's not from bad genes, most of the time it happens when the chick is cramped in the egg or the incubation period had a lot of problems.

Unless I know there has been a spike in temp or I have given the vitamins and it has not corrected itself. It is the chop. I always think if I bought that bird as an adult from someone who new it had a fault it would be deception by the seller to the buyer.I cant do that. They are a waste of money to pay good money for a breeding fault.

my two cents worth---like mummaroo I used to treat birds, hope they got better, if they did they were never good specimens and got sick again------now I have come to the same position , if they get sick, they are culled, a deformity culled, I do not vaccinate my birds, I am trying to breed them for resistance-----obviously an injury or the like I will treat, conservatively, but will not allow a bird to unduely suffer-------there are a few noteable exceptions,I will give supportive treatment for fowl pox and if I get an outbreak of cocci in a clutch of chicks, I will treat them, but that is my limit-----I too am against over use of antibiotics and believe it does lead to breeding new drug resistant bacteria-----not only with my chooks, in people too----so many doctors give antibiotics for a viral infection-----it does nothing except make the person feel as if the doctor is treating them,in my book a doctor who diagnosis a viral illness and does not give antibiotics but sound advice is the sort of doctor we should be seeing

I know a lot of people do not agree with others views, but we need to respect their choices and sometimes one has to do, or decide the best for the greater good, do you risk 20 chooks to treat one?I would not------maybe comes from my disaster training, the greatest good for the greatest number----sometimes hard decisions need to be made, cheers pam

No sensationalising, just the history of bugs and antibiotics
the Zimmermann bros are both University lecturers/doctors
Amazing read for a text book

Us chook lovers will do the right thing ah Joanne my Smithy Lavender Pekins or Lemons are too valuable to chop.
