Tutty, how many peafowl do you have?

Even during the mating season our peafowl are quite subdued... but then I guess we like to hear them honk when an intruder/visitor approaches or when a predator is in their area. We don't mind their intermittent calls of an evening either... does your neighbour also complain about native birds like the Kookaburras, sulphur crested cockatoos or Major Mitchells or even the noisy little lorikeets?

I can't understand his problem at all. Mind you we had a neighbour who couldn't tolerate the noise of the overhead flightpath... he actually sold up and moved to Mount Tamborine. We are nowhere near an airport either so no really loud noises or anything... very curious!

Mind you I wouldn't like noisy drums on the go every time I arrived home either (Thanks for that suggestion Ian).

Has their been any improvement in his attitude to date?

Good luck Tutty

I am so sorry Mandy. It is so stressful when you have that situation. I would think from your regulations that he doesn't have a leg to stand on but of course once someone has started up that rubbish it goes on and on. There is no way that you can quieten your boy. It is totally normal for him to call in mating season. Ring your council and see exactly where you stand as I would think a rooster situation would cover your dilemma but I would make sure. Without being silly, if you are OK legally I would just kindly suggest to the guy that he wear earplugs in the garden!!! Or ask him could you give him eggs from your chooks occasionally to make up for the inconvenience as I think I remember you have chooks? It is that thing about "Getting a Life" but even if you are in the right I suggest you try and smooth over thing as and get him on your side. You don't want him shooting your bird or something. Again, in total sympathy and can only hope that things sort themselves out. Good luck.

We have one peacock and 2 hens and since his complaining phonecall they have all settled down again since their breeding season is over (I think) so he now has no grounds to continue complaining, they really only cry out once or twice a day and never at night now. But the funny thing is my other neighbour, closer to the whinger is considreing getting 2 chicks off me! He will be surrounded by peacock loving neighbours!!!!

That's really funny Tutty... does the neighbour taking the peachicks know of the complaints of the whinger?

Really goes to show that their calls weren't so bad at all though!

Hate to be self righteous but I would not sell them to the neighbour that wants the two chicks as it will only cause more trouble and stress. I vet all my buyers and suggest they have to have at least 5 acres and very understanding neighbours and attach the proviso that I will buy them back if there is any trouble. I know of a guy in SA that shot 16 of his neighbour's birds that were uncontrolled, purely the neighbour's fault and very sad but they were sitting on his roof. The breeder owns a caravan park in suburbia and breeds them but they just have free run everywhere and not everyone appreciates that. The guy rang me to find the value of a mature white male as the neighbour was sueing him for $16000 (!!!) replacement cost as it had upset his breeding program. All the neighbours hated the peacocks. We have to be mindful that we are talking about defenceless animals here and that it is up to us always to ensure that they go to as best a home as possible. There are plenty of people who have the right conditions for peacocks without sending them to less than ideal circumstances. I know that your guy needs to get a life but I suggest that you do everything you can to mollify him and calm the situation down. I also have to say that I believe 8 weeks is far too young to sell chicks at and that is only my opinion. I know I live in Vic and it is colder but I get calls all the time from people all over Aus that have bought them at that age and lost them. I know I am probably treading on toes but the world would be a lot happier place for animals if we were all thinking about where they are going to. Cheers, Pam

I am a peafowl keeper/breeder and an Environmental Health Officer for a Council.
Every Council has different "Local Orders Policies" so in some ways there is not a blanket answer to your question.
In the area that I work (and this would relate Australia wide.)
The Local Goverment Act allows Council (under Section 124 "Orders")to prohibit the keeping of animals (in this case Peacocks or anything else)where they are deemed to be "an inappropriate kind or number or kept inappropriately."
Your council could deem them to be inappropriate due to "offensive noise"
Council can use this clause where noise, odour or vermin issues arise and that is how they can make you get rid of them.
I do not live in my Council area (thank God) and am on 20 acres and my neighbours love my birds even when they sit on their porch staring at themselves in the glass and crapping everywhere.
Hope I haven't confused you.
Buggsy. (Rob).

Curiously we've noted that our peafowl don't wander far at all, in fact they remain around the house but certainly haven't found any of them wandering further than within the acre skirt of our dwelling when they do roam free. Even the resident peacock Pretty Boy remains within that boundary fortunately. We've never seen them in either of our front paddocks, bush or neighbours' properties at all and we are only on 10 acres. So far, touch wood, no complaints from any of our neighbours either. We've heard tales of strange individuals skiting that they would like to shoot a peafowl to see if it tasted like Turkey, but no, nothing else. We were very fortunate to have sourced 4 peachicks at 6 weeks of age in March 2008. It is of course very well known as to why peachicks are preferable to buying mature peafowl. Such treasures, all but one poor little mite survived, dying in my arms at daybreak on 1st May 2008, an unexpected bitterly cold morning, nearly broke my heart, but knew it was loved dearly and thankfully the other three are fine, healthy young peafowl. It would be most unfortunate to deny the neighbour sourcing two of your peachicks because of your intolerant neighbour, very sad indeed.

Neighbours:

Your next-door neighbor is not a man; he is an environment. He is the barking of a dog; he is the noise of a piano; he is a dispute about a party wall; he is drains that are worse than yours, or roses that are better than yours.
Chesterton, Gilbert K.

In great cities men are brought together by the desire of gain. They are not in a state of co-operation, but of isolation, as to the making of fortunes; and for all the rest they are careless of neighbors. Christianity teaches us to love our neighbor as ourselves; modern society
acknowledges no neighbor.
Disraeli, Benjamin

Love thy neighbor -- but don't pull down your hedge.
Franklin, Benjamin
A bad neighbor is a misfortune, as much as a good one is a great blessing.
Hesiod

We make our friends; we make our enemies; but God makes our next door neighbor.
Chesterton, Gilbert K

Regard your neighbor's gain as your own gain, and your neighbor's loss as your own loss.
P'Ien, Tai Shang Kan Ying

Nothing makes you more tolerant of a neighbor's noisy party than being there.
Jones, Franklin P

This is the sum of all -- righteousness. In causing pleasure or in giving pain, in doing good or injury to others, a man obtains a proper rule of action by looking at his neighbor as himself.
Mahabharta

When strangers start acting like neighbors... communities are reinvigorated
Nader, Ralph

To keep the Golden Rule we must put ourselves in other people's places, but to do that consists in and depends upon picturing ourselves in their places.
Fosdick, Harry Emerson

Love thy neighbor as thyself, but choose your neighborhood
Beal, Louise

Don't throw stones at your neighbors , if your own windows are glass.
Franklin, Benjamin
