We made this chook house from all recycled materials. The main frame and upper cladding was first built to be a flue in a "Fish & Chip" shop. The project was done professionally, but the contract fell over and so the frame and cladding was destined for the scrap metal bin. It was given to us by the fabricator. We buried the legs which were different lengths at the front than the back, and concreted them into place. From there on it was old "corri" and second hand tek screws. Then some scraps of bird wire, and the timber rails off the demolished back fence (The timber makes good perches). The roof sheets are eight feet in length, and they provide solar powered shade in summer or light in winter, as the sun can only get underneath them when it is low in the sky. A heap of recycled MDF made the nest box, and a recycled colourbond sheet made an extra cover for that. We need props for the lids as it is a bit tricky tryin to get both lids up, and the eggs out at the same time. The floor is donated recycled pavers, under which was plastic sheeting, and the concrete poured in a ten centimetre strip all around the walls to prevent burrowing types from entering. On the floor we tipped about 100 litres of compost from our bin, and about 200 litres of cheap timber chips. No smells in seven months. Oh yeah, a 200 litre pickle barrel cathes rain from the gutter at the rear.

Very nice.
I like the guttering, perhaps it could lead to a waterer?

Just be careful it does not get too hot in summer, My colourbond chook shed is boiling in summer, but I find ways to combat it.

I love recycling things. This chook pen was built with a motorcycle transport crate for the upper level. The bottom level is old fencing material from where we replaced our fence after a mini tornado demolished it. The posts are old garden surrounds we had replaced with garden besser bricks. The outer run is enclosed with the wire from Kylie which is a safety chain wire and shade cloth they put around scaffolding then pull down and dump. The door to the pen is an old screen door but I tihk I will replace it in the future with a security grill door as it is stronger.

My lavender pekins are very happy in their little home.

My adorable children destroyed the toybox-to-nesting box, so I've been considering alternatives.

I have one which I reckon will work fantastically.

An old dryer or frontload washing machine. Back end in the pen. Front end with the porthole thing outside the pen. Than I can collect the eggs from outside the pen.

Good idea?

I have our 7kg LG front load machine here that I replaced a couple of week ago. I don't know exactly what is wrong with it, but if you are whitegoods-mechanically inclined and are prepared to pick it up, let me know ASAP or it may become my next nesting box.

Also, if you know where I can get a couple more locally at little or no cost, let me know.

Also while I'm in the recycled ideas thread of the Poultry Housing forum, I wanted to brag about how I finished two chook enclosures today. Yippee for me. Finally...I've got off my butt and did something substantial.

Though, of course, I use the word "finished" a little loosely.

...and the word "today".
