the male that i do have is very sensitive to the light and cannot see well at all when in full sun. so i have covered the whole pen in shade cloth and this seemes to have helped

I had 3 pairs of cinnamons 4 years ago and 2 of the males had deminished eye sight at age 3 and 4 so yes the red eyes are affected by direct sunlight I found

should i have put the shadecloth on the pen?

my male is pretty reliant on the other guineas in his pen, for alarm signals and tends to move very close to the hens but not in a normal way ;) , he is very flighty and scared of everyting even te water dish :!:

if he has sight difficulties will he still be able to mate successfully :?:

A couple of weeks ago a goanna ripped the lid off the hutch with the cinnamon gf in in and ate all the 17 or so babies exept for 3 pearl chicks GGGGGRRRRRAAAAAHHHHH :!: SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FRUSTRATING :!:

There is however some good news, i set a clutch of eggs (from the same flock as before), before the goanna decided that he wanted "GUINEAFOWL TO GO", anyway i got 24 pearl and 2 cinnamon out of the second lot :)

Yes they can have eye problems and yes they can go blind. Yes cover 60-70% of the roof with shade it will help. This also applies to silver

Riverlook Poultry , I hope you fixed the hutch so it couldn't happen again :( . Luckily on an island all we have are cats, dogs and snakes ( ) , dogs can be kept away with an electric fence, cats hate the sound the snake repeller makes as well as sticky glucose syrup on all the fences they jump over. Plus I made a cat trap for them. I have lost several chickens to cats because they have squeezed through a gap between gates or doors. I even had a cat climb on the roof and a corner of the tin had the nail removed from storms, it squeezed under and killed 3 chickens. And as I mentioned for snakes...the snake repeller dum dum dum dummmm.... <-- The repeller may work for goanna's too as they use the vibrations through the ground, though not as reliant upon it as snakes.

The babies were in a very secure (or so we thought) rabbit type cage, it has a plastic bottom and a wire top, i will include a pic so you know what i mean.
Anyway the goanna acually opened the top lid, that when in-place locks with the wire on the cage, and got in that way to eat the babies, we know this as my gran has sice tied the top lid down with rope and the other day the goanna was back on top of the cage PULLING AT THE LID !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So the babies are now safe.

I dont have to worry at all about my adult birds, as their pens are very well built by my expert dad :)
Even a human would need a grinder and an industrial grade pair of wire cutters to get close enough to take some :o
I have used those CRAP snake repellers before and the have deffinately not worked for me either for goannas or snakes, infact i have found a 2.5m carpet python not even a metre away!!!!!!!!!
As for goannas they commonly come out of the bush behind the chook sheds and to get to the eggs/babies they have to walk right passed the snake "repellers" whicj they do with no troubles!!!!!!!!!

I guess it depends on the brand. Which brand did you buy? The Snake Repeller is not 100% effective. Some snakes get into the area before they feel the pulses. It also depends on your soil type. We have sandy soil so the pulses don't travel as far or are as strong as someone with say clay soil. Pythons come out of trees too, they hit the ground and go a fair way before the pulses are felt. You also need to move the repeller around every few months otherwise they get used to it.

I can't remember what brand it was ill find out later ;)

We have Extermely clayie soil and the snake was right next to the "repeller"

I did not however move the thing so maybe your right, with the whole "get used to it" thing :o

Anyway we took the repellers out last year and did not see a snke this year which in good :-D but i know just because i didnt see one doesn't mean they wern't there
