Brahma bantams

We have decided that we want bantams as best for our family pets on our small property, we love the look of the Brahma bantams but would like to know if they are gentle and friendly with children, Also what is their life expectancy. Anyone with advice that can guide us I would appreciate it greatly? Also is there another breed that you think would be equal to the task?

Hi Coophouse,
Welcome to APF, see it is your first post.
There are a number of bantam breeds that could fill your needs, you have as much choice in bantams as you do in standard or large fowls.
The Brahmas as a breed are generally quiet and certainly are pretty, I have the large light variety.
They are good winter layers, solid body if you want to eat any excess cockerels.
They are a feather legged breed so housing has to be adequate to thier needs, mud and foot feather don't go together.
Generally they are good but like any bantam roosters you can get an odd one that can be nasty, typical little man syndrome , they will fight anything. lol
Everyone will have a favourite breed that they will recommend as the one you should get, but take your time and research what might suit your needs and takes your attention.
Take some time and read some of the posts here, we have had some informative discussions as to the redeeming qualities of a number of breeds for just your purpose.
Make a check list of what you want in the way of, showing, household eggs, meat, do you want a setting or non setting breed (hatch & rear thier own chicks) , heavy or light breed, generally heavy breeds set but don't always lay as well as light breeds which do not always reliably set, would a game breed suit, etc etc etc
Then look at the breeds available ( the choices make quite a list in breed, variety and colour available), preferably see them in the flesh and decide what colour of the choices available that might fire your enthusiasm.
Attend shows and talk to reliable breeders,seek out your local poultry club for local knowledge and assistance/guidance, they will answer your questions honestly and you can then make the most informed decision and avoid disappointment of making a wrong choice, a little time spent now will save you a lot in time and expense in the long run.

I have several brahma bants and they are real darlings in the hen house never bitchy to others and let mum take the eggs without a few pecks on the hand like my other girls like to do and sometimes draw blood. I would recommend them for you if they suit you and your family
